Need input for starting size and colors. Water bodies fished will be TVA lakes in TN - Douglas, Cherokee Watts Bar.

Dont have much experience fishing these and need a starting point that will give me some confidence when starting with them.

thanks!!!

I would try a light colored one and a dark colored one if you're just starting out with it.  That way it will kind of cover you in either scenario.

1/2 ounce seems to be a good all-around weight too.  Trailers...well there's tons of them you can try.  Start experimenting and see how it goes.

One thing that I would recommend is to alter your retrieve.  Sometimes they want a slow steady retrieve and sometimes they want a fast erratic one.

So green pumpkin, black/blue, and then a shad color of your pick.  Trailers, Zoom flukes work, I use the Strike King blade minnows as well as the Rage Menace Grub. Agree 1/2oz is a good all around bait size.

Basically this for me.  Throw in a Zako for a trailer (and take out the blade minnows for me) and you're there.  I fish bluegill colors primarily since our water is usually clear and we don't have shad in a lot of lakes. Black and blue for dirty water.  I fish a 1/2 oz almost exclusively (I do carry some 3/8 and ***/4 big blade).

Before you order chatterbaits, go onto Siebert's website and get Tremors instead.  They are the same price as a basic chatterbait but are a much better bait.  The hooks are the sharpest hooks I've ever seen on a single hook bait.  The wire tied skirts are awesome.  And they have faster startup and more vibration than a standard CB. Zero downside.

What is the difference in the foggy and tremor from sieberts ? Just looking and wondering what the difference is.

@roadwarrior would it be worth trying a cutter worm and menace grub as well? Or do the ruin the action?

I will confirm this. I literally just ordered two of the Fogy kits from them. One set in 3/8 and another in 1/2oz and they are hands down the better deal.

I like bright colors for stained water, green pumpkin for somewhat stained water and black and blue works anytime.

Here is this year's best color and trailer so far....

White Jackhammer with a rainbow shad Keitech.

Color matters but I honestly think 9 of 10 times you can get away with just green pumpkin and white or pearl.  You can really get different looks just by changing the trailer especially with a GP skirt.  I like to use black barred GP skirts, that way I can use a GP trailer to bring out the green or a black trailer to give it a harder silhouette, either color trailer looks great.  I also use a orange or chartreuse bellied sungill like color with the GP which looks like a bright sunfish, it works really well for the fry guarders.

*Best I can tell is the Tremor has a new jig head shape (round) with eyes included now while the Foggy is a football shaped head with no eyes . The Foggy "hunts" real well during the retrieve  while I am unsure if the Tremor does the same .

I like them both, but I do not use them as trailers.

I have a nearly identical setup on one of my rigs as we speak except the keitech is a touch closer in the gray color. Works very well.

Hello SWVABASS,

The Fogy is built off of a football head.  This gives the bait a lot of action.  The blade is also flat so it runs a little more shallow.

The Tremor is more like an arky style head with eyes.  The Tremor also has a slightly longer hook and a blade that is curved at the top.  The action is a little different and the bait runs a little deeper.

Next week I will have the Fogy Pro coming out that will have the bend on the blade.

For a trailer I typically throw a paddle tail swim bait.

I use either a 1/2 white , or 1/2 green pumpkin chatterbait.  I'll either be using some kind of craw trailer or a single tail grub.  Most of the time it will be white on the end of my line.

Black/blue and green pumpkin will be your staples, but you really need to experiment. My personal experience is that chatterbait colors are more dependent upon the body of water than by the season or anything else.

I've fished a lagoon where black/blue is killer then fish another lagoon 1/4 mile away and they won't touch the black blue with the same conditions and clarity.

Lots of great answers here. For me it was the 1/8oz chatterbait micro with 2.75"-3.5" fluke sticks and shad shape worms, no skirt. I spent probably four straight months with only that tied on last year, from about August till NYE. I caught a 19lb blue cat and a 7lb lmb on one, all the way down to crappies, Sandie, and  little black bass that probably only recently started hunting shads. I found the smaller lure to have a wider size pool of fish that can try the lure, as well as better success on pressured waters. It helped increase my initial catch rate which in turn gave me much confidence that chatterbaits do indeed work. Best used on BFS or spinning tackle. Gave me the confidence to go buy bigger more expensive CBs to narrow my targets now.

For TVA lakes, I'd get a shad color and a bluegill color. I have the most confidence in the jackhammer in 3/8oz and 1/2oz. I use a zoom fluke or a skinny dipper as a trailer

I buy them locally from Lake Charles Tackle which is a half block from my house. I will check into it.
