Super User gulfcaptain Posted May 12, 2022 Super User Posted May 12, 2022 So had an older MK Maxxum 36v. Lasted but the torque on it twisted the frame as it was 101lb thrust I believe but was a good motor. The Motorguide X3 isn't a bad motor either, boss has one on his boat. If I was going 24v, I would spend the money on a 24v trolling motor with anchor lock abilities over lithium batteries and go standards then upgrade later. I upgraded mine to one with that and makes fishing much more fun in wind or when you want to fish deep or slow where you can sit and not drift or fight the trolling motor. Just my opinion. And don't know enough about lithium batteries, but may need a different charger as well(don't know for sure). I'd spend more on a trolling motor before upgrading the batteries. But as for your question I would go X3, and if you go MK, step up to the fortrex. Quote

Mtnwkr Posted May 12, 2022 Posted May 12, 2022 Had an Edge 45lb, went to a maxxum 55lb. Just a better built machine. The battery life lasts much better on the maxxum even though its a more powerful motor due to the variable speed. I've also compared to a buddy's fortrex, I don't think lift assist adds anything valuable. Its plenty easy to lift, deploy and stow. 1 Quote

Can't comment on the Edge but I have to imagine the Maxxum is a much sturdier, more powerful bow mount. I can stow and deploy it with one hand. Eventually I'd like to upgrade to an Ultrex but for now the Maxxum will do. I bought it brand new with my boat in 2015 and it has performed as it should every season since then. I really like the quick turning ability of the direct cable steer pedal. An Edge would certainly work on a smaller, lighter boat. A Lowrance Hook Reveal will work with it. You'll just have to manually attach the transducer to the bottom of the bow mount and wire it up manually because the Maxxum does not have sonar built into it. Quote

For trolling motors that dont have gps/spotlock. Are there attachments to upgrade to later. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 12, 2022 Super User Posted May 12, 2022 Pretty sure the Maxxum has a maximiser for better battery life. At any rate, I've had three 70 lb. and an older 80 lb. version and they all worked flawlessly. 1 Quote

Definitely been used based on some of the scratches on it. But i definitely would have more play money then compared to jumping into a new one for 800-1000$ Quote

I replaced a short shaft with a new long shaft model on my Xpress because I fish in fairly rough waters (Lake Ontario). There was nothing wrong with the old one, so I kept it as a back up but never needed it. Sold it w/ the boat. So, I'd say pretty durable. 2 Quote
