The waves were epic. It was like facing the ocean standing on the bank.  I inadvertently snapped the tip off of his rod.  It was a Shimano SLX rod.  It was fine. Casted great, and hauled in angry striped bass perfectly.  I almost fell in while snagged to a rock and the tip just popped off.  I’ve done it before and clipped it down to the next guide and kept fishing.  It’s profound (not in an good way) what that missing 4” does to a rod.  I didn’t do it to this one but simply used a borrowed spinning rod (super carefully).   I hate how a shortened rod feels.

I see rod tip repair kits. They must affect how a rod feels right?

I sent him a new replacement.  A Fury 733C.  Hope he likes it.

Wooooops.

Happens tho.

I've tried to repair rods and they never feel quite the same to me and end up breaking again eventually.  If I broke something rather expensive (especially something I borrowed) I would maybe look into getting it professionally repaired.

None of my stuff is super high end so I just end up with an excuse to buy more stuff ?

Yup, any time you break a section of the rod itself you'll notice a compromise. You did the right thing by sending a new rod.

Be sure you post your black eye when he sees you next... :)

Did the tip of the rod break or did the tip top just pop off?  If you just popped the tip top off, and that was it.  It's very easy to replace the tip top and it won't impact the action of the rod. It's when the rod is shortened that you run into issues.   If you loose an inch off a rod the impact on the action should be minimal.  You would still have a useable rod by putting on a new tip top.  4 inches is another story.  Good move with keeping peace in the family by sending your brother a new rod.   If you only lost the tip top, just replace it and you have a perfectly good rod.

I broke a rod tonight...my 7ft medium fast Abu veritas. Got bit like 5ft from shore on a swim jig so I swung...jig rockets at me...hits the blank and snapped off like a foot. In the trash she goes ...it happens sometimes.

Rod blanks can be repaired most of the time.  The closer to the tip, the harder the repair to get right.  That last 6" is really tricky because there is so much bending happening there on every cast.  Done successfully with just the right diameter oversleeve you'll get it back to 95%.  That said, unless the rod is high end or sentimental (or you have the ability to do it yourself plus a wide supply of fiberglass blanks to choose from) it probably isn't worth getting it repaired.
