KP Duty Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 I just ordered two tatula 80's for pitch/flip. I have a couple steez....they are super nice, but not what I'd choose for a punching reel. The 6.2oz Tat is about as light weight as I'd go considering it will be on a long heavy/XH rod. I also think brass gears would be a must. Magnesium flexing? I thought magnesium was more rigid than aluminum (and also why it transmits vibrations better). Quote
newapti5 Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 IMO, as long as the drag is not totally locked down, all the above reels can handle punching or other heavy duties. Some of them may lose the smoothness rather quickly, but they can handle the task in long term all right. The question is, would you use abuse an expensive reel that is not designed/intended for that task? It's like wearing a wedding suit for gardening - it would get the job done, but it seems like a waste of material for non-rich folks. Quote

It's considerably less dense than aluminum and is actually quite brittle. It is this low density and associated low weight that are what make the material desirable as an alloy in fishing reels but also allows for a more "hollow" feeling reel. A worth while trade off in my opinion. I've never felt any of my magnesium reels flex that I can pinpoint with certainty. Winching in fish through the slop I have experienced a loss of efficiency with some magnesium reels with the same ipt, handle length and main gear diameter as an aluminum reel. The magnesium reel would get a little difficult to reel in the fish when the aluminum frame and side plate reel was effortless in comparison. The difference is slight but I have noticed it. A far greater discrepancy is when I compared similar ipt chinease plastic reels to my aluminum handle and side plate reels when winching in a fish though the slop. For certain the graphite reels are frame flexing and producing a loss of cranking efficiency. With the graphite reels it is a very noticeable difference. With the magnesium reels the difference is so slight that I have had suspicions it is due to frame flexing but haven't been able to say for certain. Quote
Tatulatard Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 What's wrong with using the aluminum frame and side plate a tatula 80, 70 and alphas for punching? They have brass gears and are all aluminum with their armed housing concept that includes frame, gear side plate and the "set plate" which is the portion of the palming side plate that locks into the frame. If you are ok with magnesium for this then the steez ct has a similar construction in the same tiny size with even better ergonomics (not a square up front as the alphas) while being even lighter. None of these reels are meant for finesse only from what I am told. Quote

Nothing. If the gears get tired, just replace them. My friend has an Alde 50 spooled with 50lb braid on a Phenix Feather 7'7"XH for punch/pitch duty. Suits him just fine. If the gears get tired he'll replace them. Personally, if I'm making 50-70 ft pitches with heavy line, which is often, I prefer a taller, wider, spool than the TW80's 32mmx19mm spool. Just my preference. I'm not bothered whatsoever by fishing with bulkier or purpose built HD reels, so a reel the size and specs of the TW80 will be used for lighter line work. However, if I change my mind about that and go the other way down the line I'm not going to sweat it one bit. 1 1 Quote

I agree 100%, folks WAY over think things and should probably just fish more. My old OG Tatula rods (no idea how much they weigh or what they are rated for) paired up with my Tatula SV TW103 reels (again, no idea about what they are "supposed" to used for) catch fish however I need them to. Is the old 7' MH R action specifically for squarebills and shallow cranks? I doubt it, but it does great. Is the 7'6 H the ideal jig rod? Probably not, but it has caught 1000s of fish from dragging football heads in 20 FOW to skipping 1/4 swim jigs under docks, makes a good frog rod too. The reels have been beat to death flipping, punching, frogging and anything else I've asked them to do. I'd encourage guys to worry less about having something perfect and enjoy the time on the water. Then why not use them or get another one? They are expensive and I’m trying to get that for less than $700. I paid $350 for all of mine Quote

Once we top out with overwhelming weeds around here I'll have mine spooled with straight braid. Most solid fish will come in along with a big mop of milfoil matching their weight. That, and fighting them through vast Lily pad fields, will test the gear train. We'll see how it goes. I'll report honestly about it. Quote

Fastbee Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 Probably...I'll most likely break down eventually and try one myself. Quote

I’m not a fan of the boost spool in the zillion for things like pitching as I prefer the sv control. Do you think the new tatula 70 and alpahas 70 has enough power/durability to handle something like punching ? The Alphas is solid. The handle is a bit small at 85mm but that can be upgraded easy enough. 1 Quote
