So took the 873 out yesterday with a 3/8 jig and trailer (totaled  5/8) and then also put a 5/16 finesse jig with trailer (totaled  3/8) on the x-bites…wow those are two awesome rods! I definitely had fished too heavy a jig with the x-bites…feels much better with a little less weight. Thank you all for the recommendations! .

With a full sized trailer the X-Bites felt in the zone around 1/4oz, or 5/16 for me. That weight with a spicy beaver was absolute money in the grass.

I'm glad you're having a blast.

Ok...so back again.  Love my 873...but i want to find a fb jig rod for 5/8 jig with trailer up to 3/4oz jig with trailer (so prob 3/4oz-1oz total).  What would your recommendation be?  I might even throw a 1oz fb jig occasionally.  Should I go 894 or 895c?  Or is there another rod that you would pick (904c, steez bc2...). Thanks and happy new year!

Fenwick  7' Med action HMG spinning rod.   Of course I use jigs with no weed guard(yeah even in the 1/2 to 3/4 range), and pretty light hooks.  In conditions that don't require a weed guard, like hard but not heavily grown up bottom, thats my main go to jig setup.

St Croix's Legend Elite 7'4" HF rod will handle up to 1 1/2 ounce.

I’ve heard good things about the legend elite. Have you had a chance to compare their sensitivity next to an nrx?

I have an 893, 873, 854, & 895.  If it were me, I would go with the 895 because the difference between the 873 and 854 (894) is not that different.  IMO, the 895 will expand your range a little more and you will not lose anything in the middle.  G Loomis tends to have tighter weight ranges than others, so they will punch a little above their weights.  I have moved to all NRX for bottom contact because I know what I’m picking up.

I like a rod that has a pretty good parabolic bend for the large footballs.  I use a 894 for flipping jigs with the stout hooks.  Footballs often have a medium wire hook. The 894 is very fast and can unload easily. The recommendation for the 7'4" h st croix would be a really good one. The 873 is a great football jig rod as it's a bit slower than the 894. I wouldn't be afraid of  a 3/4 football on the 873.  Your not trying to drive the same size hook.

Thank you!! Have you ever used an 894?  Also, when using the 895, does it still handle fb jigs on the lighter side ((eg 1/2 ounce)? I think 873 cover 3/8 up to 1/2. Also, I have heard that the 895 is really tip heavy. I’m not one that’s really stuck on balance but is it noticeable? Thanks again!

Catt has recommended the TT731MHFB twice in this thread, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. ALF has this on sale.

Everything you need in a jig& worm rod!

wow haven't heard that in awhile lol. Tom..you never fail to make it interesting lol.

I have had a couple tatulas and just haven't been that impressed.  Trying to stick with NRX for my bottom contact rods. Unless someone makes a strong argument for another bc rod.  Thanks for the feedback!

I have a couple that I like but most recently it has been the NRX+ 904C. I have paired it the 8.X:1 Metanium and it works perfectly for jigs.

What’s the heaviest you use with your 904? (Including trailer)

3/4oz is the heaviest jig with trailer I have thrown on it but a 1/2oz with trailer is my favorite. I have also used some 3/4oz frogs and a 3/4oz punching weight with a beaver.  All have been fine on this rod.

I also have the 895C NRX+.  It is also rated up to 1oz but this rod is way more powerful than the 904C. I would say it could easily handle a 1oz jig with trailer, probably up to 1.5oz.

I have a 7’4 heavy Elite and NRX+ 873. The elite is 96% there. Very good for half the price. Considering you can get the Croix %30 off now it’s a no brainer. I have an extreme 7’1MHXF and it’s just as sensitive as my NRXs.

I have never used the 894 (I have the 854) and I have never tried light FB jigs on the 895.  It is my newest G Loomis rod and I already had better rods for that use.  The 873 is rated from 1/4 to 3/4 and it handles that very easily.

Tip heaviness is not an issue with me and not something I notice (it’s a 4 oz rod) but I know others who say it’s a deal breaker.  Personally, if you only occasionally throw 1 oz (total weight), I think your 873 is fine.  The reason I suggested the 895 is because I personally don’t think you are going to add a lot with the 894.

Edit:  Others have recommended what I am sure are great rods as well…I’m not a shill for G Loomis.  You said you loved your 873, so I added additional perspective on other NRX rods.  People get a little funny when it comes to their rod recommendations.

No that’s exactly the feedback I wanted!  I appreciate it!  Not many have the 895 so it’s good to get good feedback. I think this year I’m going to be throwing more 3/4-1.5oz to keep it on the bottom when fishing deep…so I think I will go with the 895c. One thing I need to double check is I have a steez 7’4xh (older model) and haven’t tried it with heavier weight. I use it mainly for flipping heavy. I’ve thrown a 1/2oz jig before and wasn’t impressed with the sensitivity. But maybe I’ll try it with a 1oz before I make a final decision.

Cool thanks! Yeh I have an xh steez and while it doesn’t have the best sensitivity, it’s a great pitching rod.
I’ve heard the 904 is a good bottom contact rod. it’s a little long for what I prefer.
has anyone tried a 5 power? Eg  895…just wonder if a 5 power would be better for larger jigs…or is 4 enough?

My 904 is my first Gloomis rod, expectations were pretty darn high.  For the most part, they have met or exceeded them, but sensitivity is the one where I probably had over hyped it in my head.  When using my favorite sized weights, I find the Steez AGS my most sensitive, very closely followed by Adrena and Conquest as a tie.  I guess what I'm trying to say is they're all relatively equal and excellent in my hands, but one is quite a bit cheaper.  I've never seen one, let alone fish one, but I've heard there's a big jump between the 4&5 power in Gloomis.

There certainly is a big jump... Fishing the Conquest 905c I have thrown 1/2 jigs with trailers and it can do it - not the best for 1/2ounce but 3/4 + trailer it does well at. -

905c is big and powerful compared to the 4 weights  the rating jumps to 3/4-3 ounces!

That said - once you hook into one on the 905 - you have more than enough power to steer big bass.

Throwing 3/4 to 1.5 oz + trailer? the NRX 895 is rated 3/8 - 1 ounce

Throwing these I would step up to the Conquest 905c which would handle these better and better balanced The conquest 905 is rated 3/4-3 ounces.  I throw heavy jigs with big trailers ranging from 3/4 to 2+ total ounces on this setup with 50lb test braid and thick heavy wire hooks - handles these lures fine and gives enormous hook setting power / fish control

I don't have the 7'4' HF, but have 2 LE 7' MHF, and an NRX 843MBR.  Sensitivity seems to be ALMOST as good as the NRX, but the SC is stouter and I feel more comfortable fishing heavier weights with it than with the NRX.  I have no doubt the SC 7'4" would work well for what you want.

I have two rods for these applications. My 1/2 oz jigs go on my 854 JWR IMX Pro, and 3/4 oz jigs go on my Orrochi Brailist. Cant say enough good about my Brialist, it is a fantastic bottom contact rod.

Any of you actually weigh a jig?

The package could be marked 1/2 oz and the jig actually weighs 3/4 before adding a trailer. The 3/4 oz jig package is marked 3/4 oz and actually weighs 5/8 oz without a trailer.

Some jig makers use the amount of lead the head weighs less hook and skirt. Other makers weight the jig with hook less skirt and others the packaged jig weight with both hook and skirt.

Splitting hairs selecting rods by advertised lure weight rating is insane. What matters is how well the rod cast the jig and that varies more with action then power because no standard applies to power, some consensus. With fast and extra fast action.

This thread is more about price point then performance imo.
