Super User ATA Posted May 7, 2022 Super User Posted May 7, 2022 Since I get to have extra spinning reel (Exsence 3000), I want to buy a dedicated rod for float tube fishing, I have two ugly stik GX2 for my float tube so in case if they drop in water, I wouldn't worry about it. But here I have chance to add another combo for float tubing. They said you need a short handle for kayak and float tube so it will not interfere with PFD. we have St.Croix Mojo Yak but it is 7' long, So make story short, Tell me what you think will be best rod for me. Super User Hammer 4 Posted May 7, 2022 Super User Posted May 7, 2022 When I was doing a TON of floattubing , both salt and fresh water, I used rods from 6'8" up to my swimbait rod at 8'. I never wore my pfd, so nothing to hamper the rod length. I would say 6'8" to 6'10" would likely be a good size. BTW, I used both spinning and baitcasting rods. Most of the time my go to rods were 6'10" to 7'. 1 Quote
MiceNReets Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 I float tube fish all the time. I just use my regular rods id use from the bank or the odd chance I get on a boat. I have 2 rod holders for my float tube and I also picked up rod floats from bass pro. They come in a pack of 3. Just slap them on the rods that aren’t being used so if they fall in they’ll float. When I change setups then I just take a float off and put it on the rod I’m sticking in the holder. 2 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted May 7, 2022 Super User Posted May 7, 2022 I use to have a float tube and just fished my regular stuff for the most part. My favorite at that time was a Fenwick Elite Tech Walleye. It was 7'3'' and had a whip like tip. I broke 2 or maybe 3 of them. I would not recommend it but the action and feel of it were ideal. It had a longer handle and I could whip a light weight bait easily from a sitting position. So what I would look for is a 7' and under rod with a whip like tip, a stiff bottom and mid section that could drive a hook home, and it would need to handle a wide range of baits from about 1/8 - 1/2 oz. I think might already own the right rod, the St. Croix Mojo Yak. I would give it a shot and see if it works. Another suggestion, I have only held this rod in hand, and big difference in cost .....Megabass P5 Kameyama Special. It has a crazy whip like tip (stinger) and is pretty stout. It is definitely a weird rod. It almost feels like a rod made for crappie but it has all the attributes I mentioned, plus it's shorter. Also, I would be more worried about putting the reel in the water than the rod. It will happen more times than you think. I would get a kayak rod tether just in case. 1 Quote

That was the one I thinking of. This gives a little info on it but its pretty much what I thought of it when I held it in hand. You have to go to the end of the video. I also was looking at the NRX rods when I was hunting for a new spinning rod and ended up with NRX Ned Rig rod. It seemed to fit what I was looking for but I really liked pretty much all of the rods in the P5 line up, especially the Windbuster. The one I mentioned just wasn't what I needed but it was definitely unique. If you can get through, the guys in the video are great to deal with. Just let them know what you are looking for. 1 Quote

I know them, I might go AZ myself next week. I am also looking to NRX+ as well. 1 Quote
