Super User Bird Posted May 6, 2022 Super User Posted May 6, 2022 Wife and I were fishing a beautiful small lake in southern VA Thursday and I had a strange foul hook on a smallish largemouth bass. Was throwing a 5" weightless senko on a 3.0 hook and the Bass actually sucked it through the mouth and out of it's left gill, so when I set the hook, it hooked the Bass on the side with the line running in through the gill. I simply cut the line and unhooked the Bass which swam off uneffected. Been fishing a long time and this was a first. 8 Quote
Way north bass guy Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 That is a weird hookup, but I will say, that is an absolutely beautiful looking fishing spot you have there ?? 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 7, 2022 Super User Posted May 7, 2022 I had that happen about 10 years ago, but the only difference is the bass didn't get hooked. The bass was a dink, and the worm with the hook in it turned sideways. The hook couldn't pass back through the gills. 1 Quote

Super User WRB Posted May 7, 2022 Super User Posted May 7, 2022 I have had that happen when a bass engulfs a worm and goes out the gills and another bass eats the worm ending up with 2 bass on the one cast. Tom 10 Quote

Tom There should be some kind of record for that. I’ve seen some crazy hookups but I doubt there haven’t been many who have done that. Quote

I night fishing a private lake from shore using a black 6” curl tail Super Float worm, 3/16 oz sliding sinker. Felt a tap lowered the rod tip to take up some slack and the bass just about pulled the rod out of my hand, no hook set needed. Crazy fight that ended up 2 bass about 4 lbs each. The line didn’t cause any gill bleeding and released both bass. Tom 6 Quote
RealtreeByGod Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 Obviously not a bass but I have no clue how I could've possibly stuck him in the side like that while deadsticking cut bait on a circle hook. 1 Quote
Alex from GA Posted May 9, 2022 Posted May 9, 2022 Yesterday on a buzzbait hooked on the outside of the mouth through the mouth and into the head. Took a while to get the hook out and the fish released. 1 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 9, 2022 Global Moderator Posted May 9, 2022 I had never done it before, until I did it twice, two days in a row. I caught 2 flathead catfish 2 days in a row while fishing for bass, that inhaled my bait so hard it it blew out their gills and I hooked them right outside their gills (one in the base of the pectoral fin with a Ned rig and one with in the skin just outside the gill flap with a finesse jig. Both were during their spawning time so I assume that they weren't attempting to eat my bait but instead get it away from their nest ?♂️ Best reason I could come up with it. 1 Quote
