Baits You Hate Throwing, but Do Anyway

What do you hate to throw, but it works, so you throw it anyway?  

 

For me, drop shots and ned rigs.  They're so slow and boring!  At least with a shaky head I can give it some action, and not be afraid to scare off the fish.  I know you can fish them faster, but by the time I'm grabbing these rigs, I'm pretty much convinced that the fish aren't biting anything that moves, so these are my methods to slow it down to almost a standstill.  

 

I know some people hate throwing crankbaits because they get hung up so easily.  But at least using a plug knocker is doing something!

One of my best techniques that will seemingly always produce during calm conditions... but is very difficult and painstakingly slow to fish... is fishing a weightless t rigged senko up to depths of 20ft. Yes, I have caught fish sitting on bottom in about 20ft of water on a weightless senko. It takes like 30-45 seconds for the senko to reach bottom. But once it's on bottom... look out. Bass hardly ever see weightless senkos that deep and it is like stitching a worm in its stealthy presentation. If it is a calm day, this technique is deadly on a spinning outfit.

I hate fishing crankbaits.  No other lure has caused me as much grief, and strife, and blood loss.  But I catch sooooo many fish on them....including my PB, that I can't not throw 'em.

Oh, yeah for sure, my wife often out fishes me by casting a weightless t-rigged trick worm on 8 lb mono in 6 to 20 feet of water, her "technique" is to put the rod in a holder and read her book and wait for me to say "you have one on" and reel it in.

And that is without working the worm and not giving a slack line fall.  One of those casts like that takes 5 minutes to bring back. The only thing that keep me fishing that technique ocassionally is its indisputable success rate. I caught a nice 5lber on that technique last year.

The 3 that I hate that I still try are topwaters, swim jigs and chatterbait style lures. Spinnerbaits are my number one bait right now, 2 rods on deck, so you would think swim jigs and chatterbaits would suit me, nope. Topwaters I can never figure out the timing, I just need to work with them more, but I have been saying that for 10+ years.

Oh yeah, it's either laying on the bottom, or slightly gliding or waving with the boat. I bend a round bend hook to be a bit like a circle hook, they sometimes double the rod over and pull drag. Works even better with bacon.

You can put me in this group too.  I try to avoid fishing almost every ultra-finesse tactic out there if at all possible.  I know there are times when I have to do it if I want to catch fish, and I will.  I just don't like doing it lol

Don’t hate ‘em, but truth be told, hundreds of cast and cranks just isn’t my preferred style. Probably why I like soft plastics so much. But I do fish them. Especially squarebills.

I dunno, I would much rather fish a spinnerbait or swim jig, and most of the time any of the three will work, but there are times when a chatter just gets it done, I think it's the rod shaking thing, but It might just be in my head now.

Jerkbaits. Two old broken wrists, and tendonitis in the elbows takes all the fun out of throwing them. That said, when I'm marking suspended smallies and they won't eat a grub or a kietech, I'll suck it up, put my big girl panties on and have at it. Nuthin a few Advil won't fix.

They certainly catch fish but I feel almost to masculine and want to pull my hair out when throwing them......but those little finessey things work.
