Super User slonezp Posted May 4, 2022 Super User Posted May 4, 2022 Does anyone know with the digital controls offered by Yammie and Merc, are you able to dial speed down lower than what I would call idle speed or 4-5mph? Could you dial it down to 1-3mph for trolling? Or is a kicker, drift bags, or trolling plate still needed to get that slow? If it is possible, does it require autopilot? I know Yammie pairs up with Garmin for their autopilot. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted May 4, 2022 Super User Posted May 4, 2022 The digital guages dial up an RPM, not speed, the Yammis (at least the salt water ones) go down to 600, depending on the boat and setup, one will probably start having trouble maintaining heading below 800, dialing in the prop will help a bunch too. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted May 4, 2022 Super User Posted May 4, 2022 My ProXS is digital and also tunes to a specific rpm. However it only only allows a dial in down to 'clutch' ahead. I'm not a big troller, but the boats steerage is not the best at that speed and it seems too fast except for maybe Musky. A-Jay Quote
Deephaven Posted May 4, 2022 Posted May 4, 2022 Trolling bags will make it trollable depending on which one, but generally a kicker is better for that. Big motors usually push too much prop to be good for trolling. Quote
Alex from GA Posted May 4, 2022 Posted May 4, 2022 If you know you're going to be trolling that day you can change the prop to a short one. Just don't over rev when changing places. Quote

I'd be able to troll with the TM as long as the wind isn't bad. I know a lot of walleye guys will use the kicker for propulsion when trolling in conjunction with the Ipilot to steer the boat. Quote
Deephaven Posted May 4, 2022 Posted May 4, 2022 Trolling plate and bags then depending of course on the speed you are trying to achieve. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted May 4, 2022 Super User Posted May 4, 2022 I'd toss a trolling bag out on each side and throttle up to get your speed. Quote
marinetech Posted May 5, 2022 Posted May 5, 2022 For the Yamaha you can install rocker that will change rpm's by 50 up or down. Quote

How low is it possible to go without bogging down the motor? Is trolling 1-3mph doable? Idle on my 2 stroke ProXS 225 on a 20 ft Lund was 4-5mph. The plan is to move into a 23-25ft hybrid bay boat. Same style hull the Lund had. Deep V at the bow and a pad at the stern Quote
marinetech Posted May 6, 2022 Posted May 6, 2022 I believe it will not allow the outboard to go below 500 rpm's so it's not going to bog. I strongly doubt you will get the boat down to 1 mph. You will need to slow the boat down some other way. If it has trim tabs putting them all the way down will help. Quote
