Why is it so hard

Bank fisherman…why is it so hard to pack a tackle bag? 
 

I have a rather large bag that holds all of my tackle for bank fishing and I don’t care how many times I try, I cannot keep this bag in a simple state of storage. I keep Three water proof Plano boxes in it. One box for jigs, one box for terminal tackle and one box for chatterbaits. Sounds simple enough and not too bad.

 

But what about the 400 packs of soft plastics that I can’t help wanting to stuff out the rest of the bag with? It’s like FOMO with fishing tackle at its worst.

 

I’m going to try and pack three packs of worms for shakey head, three packs of creatures for T-Rig and three packs of trailer plastics. I do keep an extra spool ready to go as well. This struggle is very real.

I'm a bank fisherman and some of my best outings have been when I walked out the door with a lure tied on and maybe two or three in my pocket. At the most I wear a wading vest (not very stylish, I know) with velcro lure binders holding my hard baits and soft plastics in their bags. True, I can't take everything and have missed plenty of times on my choices. Experience helps me gauge how to prepare based on where I'm going and conditions. Too many baits to choose from is a guarantee for a less than productive day for me.

One attack bag contains topwater, mid-depth, & bottom contact.

 

The bottom has seven 3700 series storage boxes.

 

Contents of both are determined by the body of water I'm fishing.

 

I carry the attack bag with me the other stays in the vehicle.

 

I usually carry 3 rod-n-reels

Seriously, My solution is to take a few out of each pack and put them in the outside web pocket on the tackle bag. Then I can just grab one if needed . I can’t take it all so I decide on a few baits based on where Im going to fish. Works for me. But I still have a few whole packs on the inside…

I'm strictly a bank guy and my approach is usually 1 tackle tray and a few bags of plastics. Try to limit myself to 3 rods most of the time as well.

You may do best by eliminating most of those things. Pair it down to a handful of baits that work well on your lake depending on the season.

I can't bring myself to only carry one rod while bank fishing unless the terrain is rough. I know some on here do usually carry only one rod and recommend it; it certainly helps with mobility. But I just don't think that I can do everything with say a 7' MH. As much as I don't like em, I at least need a spinning rod with me. 

 

Anyways, just agreeing with you. Can't "like" your message because apparently I've done that enough times today.

 

Edit: when bank fishing, in terms of tackle I bring, I either pack a small amount of items in small ziploc bags and stuff them in my pant pockets or carry one of these 

I've found them to be very effective for kayak fishing as well because they keep my plastics and tools dry.

I carry one topwater, one mid-depth, & one bottom contact to start out but conditions usually eliminate one or two.

I don't hear you talk about topwaters a whole lot besides maybe stanley ribbits. Do you lean towards certain topwaters while bank fishing instead of boat fishing? Trying to keep this on-topic. Is topwater highly situational for you? Do you have many days where, say, you throw a topwater the whole trip?

Yeah pretty much 

 

Totally depends on the body of water.

 

Marshes/swamps around here topwater can be productive all day. Most generally topwater down here is highly situational.

 

I throw em all from the bank or boat.

Regarding lures/techniques? Yeah it just dawned on me earlier that you’ve been comparatively quiet about topwaters and I wasn’t sure if it was because you didn’t use em a lot or because you were trying to keep stuff quiet. But, with how much you apparently fish bottom-contact, you’ve probably still got more secrets associated with that than topwater.

I carry one rod and a few lures that work with that rod and the place I'm fishing, often just one lure . When bank fishing or wading I want mobility .

Yup this ^^^^^ when I go on the bank it's only for a few hours, I take one Plano box of different hard baits, and one box of terminal tackle, than just some plastics.

It's not. On most bank fishing trips I take one maybe two rods and a small handheld bag. It's about being more interested in the fish than your gear.

I feel like I'm covered well with what I have here, so I never second guess what I've brought. Covers conditions of where I fish. No problem wading out or bank fishing with this entire show hanging on me. 3 rods will cover it all, but I like to have 5.

Really cool spinnerbaits. The more I looked at them the more interesting they became. I spy some weighted hooks, a spinnerbait with barely any skirt, and of course the terminator frames/blades. Relatively small blades too? Anyways, I’ve hijacked this thread enough. Thank you very much though.

Edit: admittedly though, I am a bit confused about all the different head styles. That is puzzling

-The weighted hook is actually a trailer keeper, I wrap some copper wire on the shank. Solder will add more weight.

-The skirt with little skirt left started out with a full skirt (Three days of good fishing with pickerel mixed in), I'll fish it until it's almost all gone then replace it.

-Spaced out small blades in the right combination give the illusion of a large blade without the drag, these are my really clear water sunny day spinnerbaits, (yeah, that's a thing), so I fish them fairly quickly with an erratic retrieve, and smaller blades do that better,

-And finally, I don't feel the head shape (within reason) makes a big difference, all of those fish essentially the same.
