padlin Posted April 28, 2022 Posted April 28, 2022 Going to try out this product after losing 4 sets of terminal tackle last week to early season pickerel. Says you can tie it so I tried an FG to join the 13 lb wire to 15 lb braid, at first it seemed to hold fine till it relaxed awhile, then the wire pulled right out of the braid. Also tried a Palomar and a uni for the hook, neither tightened worth a darn. If anyone has successfully used this product can you let me know what knots you used? Quote
Super User FishTank Posted April 28, 2022 Super User Posted April 28, 2022 You might try FC. I have used 8lb for walleye and I think I lost maybe one lure in the past 15 years. I have more than I can count brining bass in. Quote
padlin Posted April 28, 2022 Author Posted April 28, 2022 I was trying out 6 lb mono on a light rod, I could try FC instead. Would still like to know how to tie the wire. Quote
Bass Rutten Posted April 28, 2022 Posted April 28, 2022 Coated wire? If not… If coated then a crazy alberto. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted April 28, 2022 Super User Posted April 28, 2022 I fish 15 and 20 lb mono for pickerel, and haven't had a bite off in 3 years, (probably just jinxed myself). Uncoated multi strand wire, I would go with an Albright to trace of mono to FG, or modified Albright to braid, or a tiny swivel and a crimp, but I think that is overkill IMNSHO. The lure selection helps too, a spinnerbait, JB, or other long lure with the hook(s) midway or further back will all but eliminate bite offs. Quote
softwateronly Posted April 29, 2022 Posted April 29, 2022 I'm partial to alberto to join braid to 7x7. And for some reason my old rigging days means I tie a bowline similar to this style to my bait. Works for coated or uncoated, but I'm pretty sure a bowline is @ 66% knot strength at best. scott Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted April 30, 2022 Super User Posted April 30, 2022 I use a three or four turn wrap on a trilene knot to attach the wire to hook or bait. 1 Quote
Johnbt Posted April 30, 2022 Posted April 30, 2022 I crimp single or double barrel sleeves for black wire, but that's for saltwater when there are bluefish around. These are the sleeves linked to the 49 strand wire. I crimp single barrels with a pair of pliers - squeeze half the barrel flat, turn it 90 degrees and crimp the other half. If it'll hold a 17# bluefish in the surf using 15# or 20# or 45# black coated Berkley Steelon wire leader on 17# mono it should hold a largemouth. www.tackledirect.com/american-fishing-wire-double-barrel-sleeves.html Quote
Captain Phil Posted April 30, 2022 Posted April 30, 2022 When fishing for offshore salt water species, we often run into toothy critters. King fish and barracuda have a nasty habit of dining on our live baits. The Albright Special (Alberto) has been used for years to connect metal wire to the end of mono leaders. It's easy to tie and never fails. Quote
padlin Posted April 30, 2022 Author Posted April 30, 2022 Thanks folks, the Albright with the Trilene seems to work well on the braid Used the same for a 4 lb mono setup, the wire may be too sharp, broke off the mono on my first try. 2nd attempt worked, will see how it does on the water. Think I'll to pickup some 8 lb FC, the 4 might just be too small when running into pickerel. Quote
