So I had the craziest thing happen today...

I arrived home to see a rod tube in front of my door that had been delivered by Fed-Ex that I didn't order...

The back story, a few weeks back I ordered a reel for a rod that was supposed to be available soon "the rod was not ordered from that retailer", a couple weeks after I had ordered the reel the rod company contacted me saying the rod would now be unavailable until next Fall, so I called the retailer and asked them if I could return the reel for store credit as I wouldn't have a use for this specific reel until next year without the rod I bought it for, which they were fine with since the box the reel came in was still sealed and I had never laid eyes or hands on the product. I exchanged the reel for credit towards a MegaBass Rod, which has since arrived and is one fine rod, let me tell you. Everything was good to go...

About the same time I also ordered a couple other reels, a couple hundred bucks in line and another rod from them, I didn't add up the entire amount, but I spent over 1200 bucks with this company in the past 6 weeks. If Winter would ever go away, I could get out and fish these new toys...

Back to today, I knew a mistake had been made, but I figured before I called them to inform them, I would see what on Earth they had even sent me, so I popped open the end of the tube and could tell it was another MegaBass rod, clearly something in their system glitched and they sent me a duplicate rod identical to the one I got from them a few weeks ago that I had not ordered nor paid for... Now I don't know if they would have ever caught on to this or not, but I am an honest person and I would never consider keeping this rod or anything for that matter and so I called the company to inform them of their mistake.

Now this is where it got kind of crummy, I was put on hold so it could be looked into as to how this could have happened, after a few moments on hold the person got back on the line to tell me they were emailing me a return label to put on the tube and send it back, I then asked if Fed-Ex would pick it up off my porch or if I had to drive into town to drop it off. They then told me I would have to take it to Fed-Ex myself or if I wanted it picked up, I would have to call them and schedule it, which I am pretty sure, Fed-Ex would make me pay to have it picked up here at the house. To make things worse, I am out of ink in my printer so I have to buy ink to print this darn return label, making for TWO trips into town to return this thing...

Now, I do not regret being honest one bit, but there was no apology made to me what so ever for the mistake, and then they expect me to drive my 1/2 ton pickup 20 minutes each way to drop this rod off at Fed-Ex, which I am going to do because, what choice do I have, but man, really felt like a giant slap in the face after they made a mistake sending me a $350.00 rod that was not ordered nor paid for and here I was kind enough to inform them immediately of the error...

What is this World coming to... Rant over...

I believe the saying "No good deed goes unpunished." Is reasonably applicable here.

So.....what did FedEx say when you called them about picking it up?

And if you do have to take it to FedEx,  I'm pretty sure you won't need to have gone to town for ink....they will print it for you...and seal the tube....and put the label on it....I would bet

Fish it for 3 or 4 months, then send it back and call it a rental. That should cover your time, ink, and gas.

So you don't have to do anything lickity split then. If and when you have a reason to go to town for something else. At your convenience. Tell them you don't have a printer available and to mail you a label. Also tell them to schedule a pickup with Fedex. They'll do it, or they can kiss your grits.

1- buy Hello Kitty rod and reel combo from Walmart

2- return Megabass rod in original tube to the retailer

3- receive phone call from the retailer asking why you returned a Hello Kitty combo; reply that you make mistakes as well

4- tell them to make things right, keep it!

I'm with @PhishLI on this at least as far as the "it will happen on my schedule" thing, I'm going this company a favor because they screwed the pooch, and it will cost me money to do so, you don't decide when I do it, and any attempt to do so would shut the whole thing down, and I would be enjoying my new MegaBass rod happily.

Got the ink and upon further evaluation of the Fed-Ex website, I was able to take it to a local Dollar General and Fed-Ex will pick it up from there... So I got away with only about 30 minutes of total drive time and got it on it's way home.

I needed to get it out of here before I started thinking about asking them to make me a deal on it lol I love my other one so much, it sure would have been nice to have two, but my lunch money has been spent for the year...

At least my printer is now ready to rock for the whole 2 times a year I use it LOL

Mistakes are made by everyone, no big deal, but a simple apology would have been nice, then I wouldn't have been bothered at all...

I am hoping all this will lead to some good karma on the water this year. :)

Calling Fed-Ex would have likely resulted in another 30 minutes of my time wasted, at least lol

Last time I called them I spent 30 minutes on hold before I got a live person on the phone. I got someone else's package delivered here by mistake, I called to inform them, they said someone would come pick it up, two days later it was still here so I delivered it down the road myself lol

I have a hard time feeling bad for large companies. If I had to lift a finger to correct their mistake, I probably wouldn’t. Shoot me.

Well said Navy Toad.  Big companies DO count on good /  decent people correcting their mistakes.

Good on you for your honesty, but also look into the law in your state for unsolicited goods. If a company sends you a product you did not order, you are under no legal obligation to return it nor pay for it, it is considered a gift.

Again, I commend you for your honesty.

I ordered my wife a pair of ear rings last as part of her x-mas presents that was less than $100 and was sent a Diamond engagement ring worth close to $2k instead. I contacted the company and was emailed a return label to print. I had to re order the ear rings then wait until the ring was processed through their returns before getting a refund. I didn't get an apology or a thanks for being honest either.

That’s bad business right there. Don’t penalize a customer for a mistake YOU made. It’s mind boggling.

Two years ago I ordered a Christmas present from BP shops. The wife and I pulled up to the house and there’s 4 large boxes sitting by the front porch. The wife starting laughing and ask what in the heck did I order. The boxes where from BPS. There was a total of 6 pairs of Lacrosse boots, 10 ammo boxes, 3 guide series jackets, a woman’s waterproof jacket and the camo youth jacket.
I called BPS and told them the problem and basically got nowhere. I called several more times over the next couple of days and again got nowhere except being put on hold for 30 - 40 minutes. Finally my 4th call I stated that I’m tired of the runaround and if I don’t get any answers this time I’ll just keep the stuff. There customer rep said that sounds like the best thing to do.

We’ll I keep the youth jacket and took the rest to the church to give to needy families except the ammo boxes which they didn’t want.

I don’t see what the big issue is here. They mistakenly shipped you a rod and provided a return label. FedEx pickups can be scheduled online or via app in less than 2 minutes. It’s not like they charged you for any of it.

Seems to me your sour you didn’t get anything for “free”. Honesty shouldn’t get you “anywhere” regardless of the dollars you spent if your truly doing it for the right reason. Honesty is integrity when no one else is looking.

Boggles my mind….people do good things then expect something in return, then complain when they don’t.

indeed, what is this world coming to?

Clearly you didn't actually read what I stated, which is a GREAT example of what this World has come to... LOL

The only aspect of it I was sour about was there was no apology made and when I asked about having it picked up at my house was bluntly told I would have to deal with that...

At no point did I make any sort of statement that I should have received anything for free...

I was emailed a label, not sent a label, there is a difference here... My time, my tape, my ink, my paper were all expected to be used without so much as an apology and when I simply asked for one thing without complaining about any aspect of the ordeal, having them handle Fed-Ex picking it up off my porch, I was met with no help, what so ever...

lf the shoe was on the other foot, a company screws up and bills someone twice, that customer would want them to correct the error. Same thing when a company screws up and sends someone two of something. Do the right thing, as you did here, with the knowledge that correcting either of the two will be an unholy hassle.

That does not apply to Amazon because, apparently, there is no one to talk to, no people involved, only computer systems ?

No ink, have them mail you a return label.

If FedEx does a pickup on a prepaid mailing label, the pickup charge would go to the shipping customer's account.

I'm also honest to a fault. Not on the same level as your two rods for the price of one, but I ordered a box of 10 Gamakatsu EWG trebles hooks and they sent me 10 boxes of 10 for the price of 1. I informed them and they replied for me to keep them. That's more than a lifetime supply of this size trebles for me.
