I hunted for 4 days in the wind, rain, and cold temps.  I had heard gobbling every morning as the sun came up behind me, but the toms never showed.  Just hens.  Finally this Jake came walking out this morning with a hen and I dusted it at 25 yards.  I had a 2 year turkey-less drought going so it feels good to fill my tag again.  I also saw deer, pheasants, raccoons, a coyote, and a mink so there was no shortage of wildlife.

What species is that turkey ? Looks a lot like a rio grande.

It's an Eastern.  That's the only subspecies we have here in MN.

I went turkeyless myself this year.

Came close to calling in a Tom blind calling, but never knew he was there until I stood up to leave. Jumped him at about 80 yards.

Good luck buddy!

It was seriously some of the worst spring hunting conditions I’ve ever experienced. I was so thankful to be hunting out of a blind. Heavy wind, down pours, temps below freezing…if I hadn’t staked my blind down good, it would have blown to the Gulf of Mexico.

On Saturday morning, I saw another hunter on the neighbors property. He was using a bow. When the heavy rain started, I saw him sprint to his truck lol. He wasn’t using a blind.

Blinds can definitely save a hunt. I’m a big run & gun guy. I’ve been caught out in it a long way from the truck and thought about the blind sitting at home.?

Nice job, gimruis!?

We’re off to a decent start here in eastern Ontario, Canada.  My 12yo son is officially a fully licensed apprentice hunter now, so has his own two tags.  He shot a nice tom on our opener (April 25th) Monday morning.  I then had a crazy 4-day work week and got out by myself Saturday morning.  Which is quite a thing, because my son has been my constant turkey hunting companion for the past 4 years but said he wants to “save” his second tag until “later in the season” which is code for I want to sleep in and play video games.?  But I realized I had not done a solo hunt in those years, hunting either with my son and/or “guiding” a friend.  So I went out on my own and called up a nice tom in the woods.  I used my 20ga. Browning BSS to seal the deal on that one at 20 steps.  I hunted again midday yesterday with no luck - seems they’re henned up bad here, and off the roost is about the best chance to sort in out.  Should be better next weekend.

If you wouldn't have said this, I never would thought that eastern Ontario had a bag limit of 2 wild turkeys.

Nice work on the Tom by your boy.  Really nice color in that glistening sunlight.

Thunder chickens in the morning! 6poundbass’s first hunt! Fingers crossed. He’s been watching YouTube videos and has a pretty good jake gobble down. I have the raspy hen call down pat so hopefully the combo pays off.
