This is like asking "What is your favorite rod?"  Can't answer either question.  I can say if I could only have one rod, it would most likely be a MHF.  Once I started bass fishing...versus anything that swims...I started using lures that fit very well in a MH's wheelhouse.

The old Techna AV 7' MF is rated 1/4-1 oz. (like many MH rods) and would make an excellent choice as Mike pointed out for his do-all rod....although Mike may prefer the MHF.

Another rod that I really like is the 7' MHF Rainshadow RX7.  Pretty sensitive, too.  Fishes above its price.  Especially the used price I got it for.  :teeth:

OP.  Your title says 'Unicorn casting rod', but in your post you said "...one that is just right for what you use it for."  More than likely these 2 choices are not going to be the same rod.  Love my Aetos 6'6" MLM for what I use it for, but it definitely isn't a Unicorn rod.  :D

G. Loomis 783C GLX.  I have had it for 15+ years and it's still as good as the day I got it.

Love my 783c!

There was a 7'3" Heavy XF in the Cabelas arachnid series that was the perfect, absolute perfect long distance heavy fluke/Casting jig rod. Broke mine and still cant suitable replacement 3 yrs later.

This.  I absolutely LOVE this rod, and if I ever broke mine, would immediately search for another.  And yet sadly, I don't fish it that much any more.

Usually, it's the next one I want to buy.

Although it is not a casting rod, one of the coolest rods I own is a no longer made G. Loomis GL3 SJR700

its a 5'10 "mag light" spinning rod with an extra fast taper, which has a very light tip but a bit of a backbone at the base.

I believe the old school Loomis rods were the only ones with this type of taper. the rod is almost 20 years old now and I still use it regularly with a shimano 1000 size spinning reel and 6 pound Sufix Seige mono. its awesome.

I don't know what a modern equivalent rod would be?? god forbid it ever breaks on me

I have a pair of rods like yours, a Loomis SJR 6400 (Mag-UL/XF) and a SRJ 720 (Mag-Light/XF).

They both have that "light tip, strong backbone" thing going on and I love them both.  I have also looked around a little bit and have never found other spinning rods like them in the US.  I have found various JDM spinning rods that sound like they are built to the same basic design, but have never pulled the trigger on one.

A BFS casting rod maybe?  Not sure if they fit those blanks in spinning trim.

I have two of them and neither is available any more. The first is an older Fenwick HMX 5'9" Medium. Back when they were brown and gold. I had two of them until one broke when my wife set the hook on a big smallmouth a few years ago. We hand-lined the fish in but the rod was toast.

Tbe second is a Fenwick EliteTech Smallmouth rod. 6'9" ML that I absolutely love as my smallie wacky rig rod. The action is just right for me and it flicks those wacky stickbaits out there really nice. Love the grips on those rods too!!!
