What was it?

Noooo!

I’ve made it a habit to never lay anything on the ground anymore. I will stomp it to death, or run it over with my truck.

H2Oxpress tac40, not particularly expensive but it was my favorite rod. I also didn't feel like spending more money on gear I already had but oh well. Ruined my morning tbh, that plus a skunk is furrowing my brow

So I had stood it up, but it's so windy that it blew over while I was up the bank and I didn't hear it fall. I had casted up the jetty and was walking slowly backwards to my tackle box. A true accident but it's harder to accept my own mistakes.

This probably belongs in the moron moments thread

I think that rod was maybe a month old

Yes, it's an old plano 6803. It became mine when my dad passed last year. One of my favorite box designs, it can fit everything I need except rage swimmers in the pack

You are a victim of Bait Monkey telepathic manipulation. He has tools in his arsenal to force us to purchase things that boggle the mind. It’s like the Force.

Many years ago I was wanting a 6' light action spinning rod for trout fishing.  Bought one at the Springfield BPS while on a trip to Branson.  First trip to the Little Red River I was getting my gear together and closed the tailgate of my truck on the rod.  Never got to make even one cast with it?

You hate to see it. :( Hopefully you're able to spring for a replacement soon. Also if it's only a month old and you have the receipt, Academy may be willing to replace it for you as their policy is like 60 or 90 days I believe. Stepping on it isn't a defect, but it's worth a shot. I've played with those Tac-40 rods a bit and they are sweet for the price tag.

I leaned a rod against the side of my car while I was getting something out of the back seat. After I got out whatever it was, the rod fell over and the door shut on it without me even touching the door or the rod. It's the invisible hand of the bait monkey.

Buy a tip top and deal with a shorter rod

I did this once.  Weirdest feeling rod ever.  I didn’t even snap off that much. 3 inch or so.

I did this with one of my frog rod years ago after I shut it in the tailgate.

This is what I've done on several rods that met their demise.

Rods are very unorthodox creatures and lend themselves to damage if not dealt with the utmost of care.

My last episode involved a st croix that catapulted off the back of the boat while backing to the ramp.

Not going into specifics but wasn't my fault.?

I had wondered if there was a way to turn this into a 5'6" mhf lol

I may do that, it's a good rod.

I hate that sound……I leaned my against a barbecue grill down by the river, it must have fell over. I did hear it fall but, I did hear that undeniable crunch sound when by friend stepped on it.
I feel for ya.

I did this once too, with a G Loomis Bronzeback rod.  It was more than just the tip though, it was about 15 inches down from the tip.  Actually, my Father did it.  He offered to replace the rod, which I was going to require if he didn't offer lol.

I’m not sure about Academy as I’ve never shopped at one, but I will say BPS, Cabelas and even Dicks are willing to give a full replacement no questions asked within 90 days let alone 30. Not saying you should lie but if the sales associate/manager doesn’t seem understanding you could plead it broke on the hook set, must have had a manufacturing flaw or was mishandled in store. I’m a true believer in “Karma” so I would tell the the truth and hope for a sympathetic person. Thankfully I’ve never had to use these tactics but they were explained ?to me from the aforementioned store associates.    Good luck and let your conscious guide you.

I've already done this exact thing in the last 6 months, it absolutely crossed my mind. The first one was me shaking hydrilla off the lure...lure bounced up into the rod with force and straight up broke a foot off the tip. I told them exactly what happened, and they gave me a new one without any hassle at all. The folks at the local Academy know me pretty well by now, and are pretty good with that sort of thing. It's a rod series that is being discontinued so I'm sure they wouldn't have minded moving the old stock out and I'd absolutely love to have another one. I generally would not have thought twice about making a good size corporation pay for my fishing rod, but I will always remember the white lie I told to good employees to get a second free rod. I go there enough that I would like to have the employees on my side if something really did come defective and I actually needed help. A good employee that likes you is invaluable as a customer of most businesses.

I ended up buying a new one through gritted teeth and had a half decent day of fishing afterward so not all bad.

I once went to untangle a wacky worm that took a bad skip and wrapped around a dock line.  The rod the worm was tied to had ended up stretched from the deck to gunnel.  A small misstep and it was half as long.  It wasn't expensive but it was my favorite spinning rod and I had caught a lot of fish with it.  I tried to find another one but couldn't.  It was probably for the best, though because I'll always remember it as better than it may have actually been.

Sounds like Karma is on your side?? If the rod series is being discontinued maybe you can find out if your friendly with the associates or stop in as much as you can and see if they’re blowing them out. I will say regardless of price if it’s  a rod you enjoy grab a back up if possible. I’ve passed up one rod series  I knew were being discontinued as that’s the manufacturers cycle and I regretted not purchasing when I should have☹️ Thankfully a member on this site was willing to part with 2 particular models I was totally bummed on missing out on originally and made me one heck of a deal in the process. Sometimes Karma is on your side.

For a number of reasons I believe I am maxed out on rods at the moment, I really should slow up my spending a bit until my back heals completely and I can start working again. We're fishing on nice, easy, flat banks for the time being.

I've been able to get a handful of the rods for less than half their original release price. I have like eight or nine of them total.

I'm also not 100% certain these are being discontinued it's just...the stock levels and price cuts at D/FW stores would seem to pretty overtly imply that they are on the way out. The stuff I buy doesn't seem to be getting replaced and they're now $80 instead of the $120 they were when released. If they are indeed being discontinued, I hope they retain whoever designed the rods...I'd buy em a beer if I ever met em
