Fishvec Posted April 18, 2022 Posted April 18, 2022 Hey guys, new to fishing in general but addicted now. Just purchased a new home on a freshwater canal in SWFL and decided to get some gear to test out fishing at my local bass pro + amazon after doing some general bass fishing research. $1000+ later, the first reel I got was the shamano curado dc and a bass pro shop 7 foot MHF. Went out fishing with my father in law for the last 3 days and I'm catching 7-15 bass per day, some really big but hard to say how big without my scale(which arrived today). My father in law has a regular spinning combo and he didn't really catch many fish over the last few days maybe 2-3 small ones, which leads me to believe three things, luck is real, the fishing techniques I researched work especially underwater analysis of bait interactions and the reel/rod combo make a big difference. I've been fishing with a variety of biospawn plastics, senkos, etc with a lot of success. Real worms had 0 luck at all. Braided sufix nanobraid 10lb Texas rigged. I really enjoy using a baitcaster and have had virtually no issues with bird nesting even learning fresh on it. Now I want a second reel/rod, I think I'll be getting either the metanium or more likely antares dc. I know they won't be hugely different from the curado but they will last a long time and the internal bearing and such will make for a better combo. Where I'm stuck is what's a good rod to improve my all around technique with good sensitivity and can handle larger bass. Does anyone have any recommendations for the shimano poison adrena or something in that price range? Quote
Super User ATA Posted April 19, 2022 Super User Posted April 19, 2022 Jesus, Are you for real? you just start fishing and catching 7-15 bass per day? where are you fishing? I have 4 Antares DC, That reel can cast everything, but since you want to put your money on sensitive rod, Get G-Loomise conquest 844C if you bank fishing, If you fishing from boat, you can go 5 7'6". All my Antares DC paired with G-Loomise Conquest and in my idea it is the only rod that deserves to paired with Antares DC :)? 1 Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted April 19, 2022 Super User Posted April 19, 2022 You running 10# braid on your Curado? I'd definitely bump that up to at least 30-40#. A Shimano Expride in the 7'2" med-heavy/fast is a great all-around rod. But maybe get a heavy for froggin/jigs? 1 Quote

Cape coral, right in the canal behind my house which connects into the lake. The antares will be used in the lake on our boat, we are buying a fishing pontoon next week for this purpose. But it will be dual purpose, and I will also be using it for salt water fishing occasionally on my father in law's open sea boat to fish the gulf. Salt water compatibility is why I'm going for the antares so the rod should be ideally good for boat fishing in fresh or salt water. 1 Quote

I'll get a 30lb and test it out now, thank you for the advice on this. What is your main reasoning for 30-40 just so I know the benefits Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 19, 2022 Super User Posted April 19, 2022 10 lb braid? I can't imagine the line dig in. If you are catching big fish, I would bump that up to 30 or 40 lb like @NorthernBasser suggested. It doesn't take much for braid to become frayed and weak. 1 Quote

Took your recommendation and went with g-loom 844C, I'll be doing a lot of boat fishing as well so I hope that's not a huge issue. I also got the antares dc XG, I have the curado XG and I enjoyed how quick the gear ratio was so figured it would be good on the next reel 1 Quote
Super User ATA Posted April 19, 2022 Super User Posted April 19, 2022 good choice, thats actually my all around combo. Quote

Great rod. I love all of my G.Loomis rods but have a different suggestion for your next rod. The Megabass P5 Super Destroyer. It's sort of the Swiss army knife of rods. It can do anything from crankbaits to soft plastic. It can throw stuff from a 1/4 oz to 1 1/4 oz and it's pretty cool looking. 1 Quote

Thank you, came across the megabass destroyer today while watching some vids on the conquest. I'll Def be getting one soon lol 1 Quote
Fishvec Posted May 6, 2022 Author Posted May 6, 2022 Just an update, bought the conquest and the second to tip loop broke on my second cast with a weightless senko. Seems it was a manf defect when setting the resin that holds the loop in. After some hoops and finding out g loomis can't actually warrenty these for months because they don't stock them and it may cost me $185 anyway if they decide this was somehow a user error, I was able to get a refund. Now I'm wondering if it's even worth buying a replacement or should I just go megabass destroyer Quote

If you are looking at adrena rods, the JDM sites have a much better selection of rods vs the USDM versions. Highly recommended. 1 Quote
