Kevin McG Posted May 21, 2010 Posted May 21, 2010 I would love some suggestion on my first fishing kayak.I am looking to spend <$250.I have looked at a few on the Dick's website as well as some we have at the local Sport's Authority and it is a bit overwhelming. I would like something light enough to carry for a short while for those no ramp ponds we have up here in NH This is my 1st kayak so I need something I won't be to hard to handle as a beginner also. Kevin McG Posted May 21, 2010 Author Posted May 21, 2010 Oh I should add I will be tossing this into the bed of a 09 Tacoma double cab with the 5' bed, extra 2' with the gate down so I am thinking of about a 8' kayak length. Quote
Super User Marty Posted May 21, 2010 Super User Posted May 21, 2010 Can't really help you except to recommend you Google the following in addition to the help you'll get here: how choose fishing kayak Quote
tyrius. Posted May 24, 2010 Posted May 24, 2010 The future beach angler kayak is on sale on the Dick's website for $300 and that includes a paddle. It's gotten good reviews and I'm seriously considering it. Quote
jkart Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 try going to kayakbassfishing.com lots of good info Quote
Stasher1 Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 I'm afraid I can't steer you towards a particular model, but I can toss a little bit of info out there that may help you. 1) Cheap kayaks aren't light and light kayaks aren't cheap. 2) Keep an eye on Craigslist. Many people buy kayaks because it looks like alot of fun on TV, but stop using them after a couple outings because...well...it's work to paddle them. 3) Look for something 10' or longer (prefer 12'-14' myself). The shorter kayaks (8' or so) are fine for rivers and stuff, but they won't track very well on flat water and you'll wear yourself out trying to paddle across a small pond. 4) Don't overlook a sit-in model. The current kayak fishing trend is the sit-on variety, but there are very few things you can do with a sit-on that you can't do with a sit-in. You're probably more likely to find a good deal on a used sit-in model, and they're typically lighter as well. Quote
bassman018 Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 I had a thread on it a month or 2 ago, I am sson to get a potomac at dicks Quote
bigfruits Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 id go for a used 10'-12' used sit on top. native, wilderness systems, ocean kayaks are some brands ive heard good things about. i have the 12' native manta ray and i think its very comfortable and great for fresh water fishing although def not the lightest option. check out the kfs forums.
