Super User NYWayfarer Posted April 22, 2022 Super User Posted April 22, 2022 My favorites are the Z-Man ShroomZ, Berkley Half Heads and the Kastking Madbite Ned kits (both regular and EWG style) Quote

I have with a jig like the fireball, but have found mushroom heads to snag up less in the rocks, or at least that is what my brain is telling me. Also the quality of the hooks on the mushroom heads I use are fare superior to the hooks on the 1/16 oz standard ball jigs I own for walleye fishing. Quote

Now I fish them with a 1/0, or 2/0 EWG hook either on a split shot rig or T-rig. *I believe it would be worth trying Ned Head jigs rigged as if they were mini - shaky heads (i.e. rig soft plastic at an angle then bury that hook point back into the soft plastic) again , like a mini - shaky head . You should hang up less ... 1 Quote

It's challenge to find the right combo of head/hook/keeper, using a mushroom head lets me care less about the keeper as they make it easy to glue the worm to the head because of the flat back. The Gophers were great as their keepers worked really well for Z-man plastics despite just being lead barbs. I also think that for the specific niche I use the Ned for, wade fishing small rivers, fishing up-down, the mushroom heads seem to snag a lot less often the a ball head of the same weight. I have a small stash of Gophers left, I think I must have gotten one of the last orders shipped before they went under. I spent a while looking for a replacement at around the same price but never did find one. There are some great options but all are much more expensive. I mostly use the River Rock ones, but I make sure to stock up when they have a 20% off sale. 1 Quote

Good point about the keeper…your post sums up why I don’t exclusively use ballheads. I have yet to find a ball head that has the right weight, keeper and hook which I want. Right now it’s just the keeper holding me back. Sometimes, I find some but the hooks are just too big. The little wire keepers that are used on the shroomz are ideal for Elaztech baits, which is what I like to use for Neds. The ballheads I use for Neds just have a bare collar, no keeper. I don’t know the proper terminology. Without super glue they are a pain to use for basically any soft plastics, but ESPECIALLY elaztech. If I can have some ballheads custom made, I would. So if anyone knows where I can get 1/16 oz ballheads with a quality #2 hook and wire keepers shipped to Canada without having to pay insane shipping/custom taxes, please let me know Quote

You can easily cut the lead with scissors or split ring pliers or a pocket knife 1 Quote

I’ll give it a shot but I’m not very nimble with my hands ? Quote

Never underestimate the ability of anglers and angling companies to take a simple, effective system and decide it can be expanded upon, improved and adapted to situations and scenarios it was never intended to be in in the first place, and then marketed to all via direct sales or social marketing and outreach, for financial gain. 2 Quote
