Just go with it. He's looking out for your best interest. At least he's not pushing for a Stella or Exsence.

I practice the art of being an adult who doesn't allow myself to be bent to the will of fictional creatures. I look at my finances and decide whether or not I can afford something, and then I look at my gear and decide whether or not I need something. That's how I do it anyways.

A $200+ reel is not that crazy.  Go for it.  You can always turn around and sell a high-end Shimano reel if you need to.

There you go trying to be all grown up and responsible.

I’ve been eyeing the Shimano Vanford for a week now and the bait monkey is starting to take over. Plz help ?

Really?? You come to a forum full of tackle addicts and ask for help breaking your addiction?  That's like a drunk going in a bar looking for the AA meeting....

Just buy it.  After all it is a reel.  taken care of it will last a lifetime.  You will be able to use it for years spreading the cost out over a couple decades makes worrying about the purchase seem frivolous Technology in reals has peaked.  Future improvements in design will only be cosmetic.  The practical value of a quality fishing reel now will change very little negating any need to upgrade in the future.  You probably wont loose it like you do tackle.  One more reel will complete your arsenal, filling the only whole in your bass line up.  Get it now, in order to get ahead of inflation.  Just one more reel will help keep the skunk out of the boat for good.

I may not have helped get the Monkey off your back, but I hoping to keep him at your house and away from mine for awhile.

I spend thousands of dollars on equipment, countless hours watching videos', read hundreds of articles, reed hundreds of posts on this site, risk loosing my job, wife, and sanity.  I even caught myself looking at a pretty girl, but only noticed she was wearing the perfect shade of chartreuse for her bikini bottom, and her top was that rare half way point between green pumpkin and watermelon. After all this time I find out all I really need to do is become an adult.  The only way to describe that statement is childish.

As soon as there's open water up here,

I will be engaged in what will invariably be a losing battle

with the boat gas monkey . . . .

Buy once, cry once.

I got all my current rods and reels back in the 1990's...they were not cheap then...and I still have every, single, one!

Funny thing...when I buy something inexpensive, I don't take as good of care.

When I buy something pricy, or built it myself, I am super careful, take great care...want it to last.

Another example....years ago I lived on acreage. Always wanted a John Deere...but couldn't afford...so got a Craftsman...three years later that thing was shelled...so I got the John Deere. Cost 3x as much, but the quality upgrade was incredible.

Moved to the city and went to sell that John Deere...used. I was asking $6k, fair price at the time. Neighbor scoffed, saying he could buy three box store riding lawn mowers for that price...and I told him, "yep, in 9 years you will likely go through three mowers...might as well get this one for $6k and save yourself some money...and this mower will likely outlive you."

He passed...

Last I counted, he was on his fourth rider from Lowes...that was 10 years ago. Hmmmm...

I really like my Vanford2500. Nice reel. Super light and smooth drag. If your willing to spend the money I’d recommend it.

Could be worse. Better than the crack or meth monkey to deal with.

Feed him something else like megabass jerkbaits, should be able to get like 10 of them for that coin…

I thought I’d beaten the bait monkey by refusing to get chatterbaits. And then I realized that I’d fallen into his trap. I became adamant that spinnerbaits are superior, and that there is simply so much you can do to modify a spinnerbait… so much to explore! See what he did? He set me up. He said, you’re right, spinnerbaits are so cool, think about all those blades you don’t have, think about the fact that you need more compact spinnerbaits. You don’t have enough

I think I was wrong calling A-Jay the bait monkey. Or is the bait monkey holding you captive? Blink twice if he is!

I think there is an issue with this thread.

Bait monkey

Gear monkey

Boat monkey

3 different demons. 3 different stages in life.

Bait monkey is the least expensive yet the most contagious.

Gear monkey is more expensive, not so contagious.

Boat monkey....Bend over

Sound advice.  Avoid debt.

Unfortunately, there is a serious lack of quality tackle shops/outdoor stores near me.  Do others have this issue?

Don’t buy a vanford (and that’s coming from a long time shimano fan boy).   Buy yourself a jdm diawa.   You will thank me later.

only question is what rod you going to buy for it!!

Yes, I do have that issue as well. I have a near 30 mile drive to get to BPS from my house and while some may think that’s not far at all, it’s inconvenient for me. My local mom and pop tackle shop closed up last month for good and they carried everything that I use and it was only about eight minutes from the house.
