Super User Hammer 4 Posted April 18, 2022 Super User Posted April 18, 2022 As best that I can recall, never spent more than a few mins. to remove a backlash, unless it was so bad that I had to cut it out, which I believe happened once. Quote
FrnkNsteen Posted April 18, 2022 Posted April 18, 2022 Last major one I had was a Daiwa that I had forgotten I had backed the brake all the way off. I run mine real loose and instantly knew I was it trouble when I HEARD it go Ffffffft! As it exploded under my thumb!! ?. I just looked down and said "I'll get that later!! ?? Typically can get them out in a few minutes though. Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted April 18, 2022 Global Moderator Posted April 18, 2022 Maybe I have the record. I’m going on about 9 months now! It’s been so long now I don’t remember how I got it but it’s a nasty one. Gave it a good 10 minutes on the lake then grabbed another rod. Got home tried again. Loading the boat up the night before the next trip and so on with no luck. Here we are 9 months later and I’m going to get that SOB eventually! Usually I just give up and break out the scissors but I’m going to beat this one. Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted April 19, 2022 Super User Posted April 19, 2022 10 minutes on the water. At home - TBD. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted April 20, 2022 Super User Posted April 20, 2022 It depends on how I got the backlash. If it happens when I'm casting the bait out then I can usually get it out in a couple of minutes. If the backlash happens when I hit something behind me, I just put the rod away and cut it out when I get home. Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 20, 2022 Super User Posted April 20, 2022 Backlash, how long do you work... Until I get my pocket knife out! I generally don't backlash that bad unless I hit something on the back cast. Quote

The Maestro Posted April 20, 2022 Posted April 20, 2022 The best way I've found to deal with a really severe backlash that goes deep is to cut the bait off and use something like a toothpick to pull the line out from underneath the overlaps. This can take a long time and quite a bit of patience but it will fix any backlash no matter how bad with no damage to the line. Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted April 20, 2022 Super User Posted April 20, 2022 I'll give it 5 minutes if there's hope, but sometimes it's hopeless on the spot. Overhanging branches in my path when I'm casting parallel to a bank are about the only thing that gets me anymore, whether on the back cast or launch. A dental pick is your friend. I keep one in my bag. If I can hook a few loops and rotate them out I can usually make things right. One just like this one came the other night from whipping a Dark Sleeper as hard as I could down a bank while surrounded by trees then clipping a small overhanging branch on the way up. Thwap! Not a chance of getting it out without running the mainline out of multiple loops, and definitely not on the spot in the middle of a Nor'easter. Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted April 21, 2022 Super User Posted April 21, 2022 In my other post I forgot to mention if it is bad enough to have to start cutting line out I will do that at home. I normally put new line on if it is that bad. Quote
newapti5 Posted April 21, 2022 Posted April 21, 2022 A couple of years? I think I still have a cheap reel with a two-year-old backlash, forgotten in the closet or somewhere. 1 Quote
