GoneFishingLTN Posted April 14, 2022 Posted April 14, 2022 So I'm looking at a cranking rod with moderate action but it's rated as a 5 power does that roughly mean mh? Quote
jbrew73 Posted April 14, 2022 Posted April 14, 2022 There is no standard for rod ratings. Tell us what rod you are looking at and advise can be offered. Quote
Reel Posted April 14, 2022 Posted April 14, 2022 5 power usually means HEAVY- A rod that could be used for deeper diving crankbaits. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted April 14, 2022 Super User Posted April 14, 2022 Is that 5 gm or 5 mg?... Quote

Phil77 Posted April 14, 2022 Posted April 14, 2022 Not much you cant do with a 7MH or 7M. I wouldn't buy a rod with a number as the action. Quote
Super User MickD Posted April 14, 2022 Super User Posted April 14, 2022 I believe that "5 power" is an older power designation that does indicate pretty heavy power, although I don't know if it's based on actual measurements or on opinions, as most power ratings (M-H-MH-H) are. Not every brand's H is the same power. The only objective power rating system is CCS, I believe. https://www.common-cents.info/ It measures the weight that it takes to deflect the blank/rod to 1/3 its length. Many of us builders use it to select blanks to build that meet our power (and action) requirements, once we have become familiar with it and many of the popular blanks. A few blank manufacturers are starting to publish the CCS numbers for their blanks, Point Blank, Rainshadow Eternity RX10, and NFC to name the ones I know about. I have never seen a CCS rating published by a rod manufacturer. CCS measures power and action objectively, but does not measure anything relative to sensitivity or response/recovery time. But I have a simple, inexpensive, process for that, if anyone is interested in measuring recovery time, true natural frequency (TNF).. PM me for a tutorial. (It requires an Android phone/Kindle/tablet + a free app). 7 minutes ago, Phil77 said: Not much you cant do with a 7MH or 7M. I wouldn't buy a rod with a number as the action. This number is a power description, not an action description. But whether power (L-M-H etc) or action (slow-moderate-fast-etc), they are very imprecise with not all makers rating the blanks/rods the same. A recent example on another forum has a blank described as M, MH, and H by 3 different people. 1 Quote

Glad you got some humor in your life. Besides being humerous, it allows one to determine objectively whether or not his premium dollars are yielding any value. How do you accomplish that now? Advertising copy? Quote

No, collecting purchase data and ignoring customer surveys, in the old days it required real work and time, today the algorithms do it almost real time, what's more, they create the feed back loop that feeds on it self. The only hard part is not spilling all the m&ms all over the baby carriages... Quote
Super User MickD Posted April 14, 2022 Super User Posted April 14, 2022 Sounds a lot like a Lorentz transformation. Not sure what a Lowrance transformation is. Seriously, if you aren't interested forget it. If what you have works, fine. Quote

If its Falcon, then that's a medium heavy which fishes on the lighter side of Medium heavy compared to others. Not quite as light as a true 'medium' in other brands, but not as heavy as a MH. thanks, rick 1 Quote

What lures are you planning to use? 5 power crank bait rods are moderate action, slower upper 1/3rd of the rod designed for crank baits 1/2 to 3/4 oz, medium-deep divers rated 1/4-3/4 oz lures. For example Dobyns MH, 705 series crank bait rods. Tom Quote
