NavyVet1204 Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 Jigs. I have them in plenty and while I’m still learning to use them properly via suggestions/advice on this site, I cant even get lucky just once lol The chatterbait took this spot on my list until recently when I tried using a color matched trailer and then the catches took off. Prior, I wasn’t using a trailer and was about to shun them entirely. Lizards of any color or size. I’ve sat on the same boat with someone who was absolutely destroying bass on a junebug red lizard T-rigged and it got to the point that I had to bum one off him just so that I could try my luck and it didn’t work. Still hasn’t either and that was two years ago. 2 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted April 13, 2022 Global Moderator Posted April 13, 2022 Spinnerbait, crankbaits, whopper ploppers, Alabama rigs, probably a few more im forgetting. No it finally didn’t work out for me haha 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted April 13, 2022 Super User Posted April 13, 2022 It was jigs for me. The year I learned how to fish them took me all fishing season. I started fishing with them in March, and finally caught a bass in October. 2 Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted April 13, 2022 Super User Posted April 13, 2022 Ned rigs. It wasn’t until I started swimming them until I caught bass. Still not a top producer (for me), but getting more consistent. 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted April 13, 2022 Super User Posted April 13, 2022 Jerk baits. I bought a few, gave them a chance after chance within reason for 2 whole seasons and just could not get a fish to bite. One day they just started working. I attribute this success to a longer pause between snaps and/or more erratic snapping action with the rod. Whopper plopper...you can forget those stupid things. They're now solely devoted as a Christmas tree ornament in my book. Quote

You can’t win if you don’t play. If I decide to fish this season, it will be the lure I will invest my time with. 1 Quote

Super User N Florida Mike Posted April 13, 2022 Super User Posted April 13, 2022 Jigs. All I catch with them is weeds. No success story though. Zoom lizards I have always done pretty good with them, but bass are on and off with them it seems. Spinnerbaits- I rarely caught anything with them and decided to fish them more often… and I occasionally get a few fish on them now. I think the simple key is to fish them more. Jerkbaits: The only jerkbait I do ok with is the original Rapala 2 -3 inch one with the red underneath the head. Kind of an off -white color. I keep trying them more ( see above principle), but I haven’t broken through with them yet… Top water frogs: Had some success more than originally but the bite is so slow with them, I wouldn’t call it a huge turn around. Did get a 7.3 on one. Chatterbaits , ned rig, whopper plopper have produced a whopping total of 2 fish total… Im a soft plastic T rig man. They are hard to beat where i live. 4 Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 13, 2022 Super User Posted April 13, 2022 GYCB Fat Ika took me some time to present where bass would strike it consistently. I thought you fished the Ika like a jig, instead it works better weightless like a Senko. Cast the Ika to the weed line break and let it do it’s thing on slack line. Tom 4 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 13, 2022 Global Moderator Posted April 13, 2022 Jigs were a tough one for me to learn, same with a bladed jig. Their now a couple of my favorite baits to fish. More recently, the drop shot was something I just could not get the hang of but it's now a rig that I'm pretty confident in fishing. 2 Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted April 13, 2022 Super User Posted April 13, 2022 Nerd Rig. I finally got out-fished enough by others in my boat that I had to do something. I bought a BFS set up and it actually became enjoyable and productive. With all the added pressure on our lakes since Covid began, I’m glad I got better at an additional technique that works when many others don’t. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted April 13, 2022 Super User Posted April 13, 2022 Spoooks . I have caught a few fish with them but my hookup ratio is so lousy that I rarely toss one .. I can make them walk too . 1 Quote
JohnFromLisbon Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 Jigs, for sure. Until last year, when it all just clicked somehow. Now they're one of my favorite ways to catch them. Quote
fin Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 Quote Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it. The list of types of lures that work for me is much shorter than the ones I've struggled with. The past couple days I've been throwing the exact same color/model of a diving craw crankbait that my buddy has caught like 5 nice largemouth over the past week, in the same place, and I can't get a bite on it. I've had good success with squarebills, but I've never had a lot of success with divers. It's probably because I'm too cheap and don't want to lose them, but I've been crawling this one right along the bottom, doing nothing but bouncing off wood and rocks. It still ain't workin'. Quote
NoShoes Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 All of them. Fished two months before I even caught a bass. in particular? Still haven’t caught one with a square bill. 1 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted April 13, 2022 Super User Posted April 13, 2022 Years ago it was jigs. I still miss fish on them, but my hookup is much better now. It took me some time to learn about fishing them. Quote

Super User LrgmouthShad Posted April 13, 2022 Super User Posted April 13, 2022 I still kind of have a hard time with lipless crankbaits. Sometimes they work for me, sometimes they don't. Hoping I can figure them out more. At one point I was a very confident jig fisherman. It was all I fished on one reservoir. Kind of need to get back in the swing of it. I did best when I removed a lot of the skirt strands and just hopped em along. I fish this pressured reservoir a lot and jigs work better than texas rigs there. I think it's because less people fish jigs there. Quote
Super User king fisher Posted April 13, 2022 Super User Posted April 13, 2022 Plastic worms. Yes, I said plastic worms. Please don't send the bass police to have me arrested or locked away in a mental institution. I bought my first pack in 1976. All I was able to do was snag the bullet weight in the rocks. I didn't start catching fish with them until 2020. Weightless Senkos were the first to score, then finally last year I started catching fish on a traditional T rig with a Zoom Trick Worm. 2 Quote
Super User Bankc Posted April 13, 2022 Super User Posted April 13, 2022 Just about everything other than a crankbait, Texas-rig and shaky head. Those are the only three techniques I can remember coming rather quickly to me. Everything else has been a struggle to learn. Probably none more so than the jig, though. Quote
DinkDreams Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 Texas rigs, Ned rigs, and spinnerbaits were really easy to pick up for me. I don’t fish spinnerbaits as much anymore for whatever reason, the bite kind of shut off on them last year and just haven’t picked them back up. Two techniques I’ve never had any success with, that are supposed to be “it’s physically impossible to not catch fish on these” are weightless Texas rig Senkos and flukes. I can catch them on wacky rig senkos, but I have never caught a fish on a weightless T rig Senko. Weightless flukes the same way. I have never caught a fish on a chatterbait (well, I snagged one but it doesn’t count) and I’m not really sure why. One lure going into this year that I never had success with was a jerkbait. I tried for a long time to get one to bite but they never did. Finally got it figured out this year and I’ve been slaying them pre spawn. Quote
Skunkmaster-k Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 Spinnerbaits were my nemesis for a long time. Now it’s one of my favorite pre spawn baits. Quote
