Kayak Fishin Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 Does anybody rely on a Leatherman (or another brand) style multi tool for cutting fish hooks in the event you end up hooking yourself? I'm not talking a dedicated pair of snips or anything like that. Any testimonials? Any models that work better than others? Any size hook you found you couldn't cut? The wire cutters on my Leatherman Wave (both the light and heavy duty sections) seem a bit soft so I just thought I'd ask. Thanks. Quote
Deephaven Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 Out of all tools to have dedicated a side cutters with enough oomph to cut a hook is super high on my list. Having to contort extra painfully using a crappy tool sounds beyond awful. I also can't say I see any value in a Leatherman though. 40 crappy tools is not better than three good dedicated ones. 2 Quote

Mine aren't as fancy - 8" cable cutters...tested on heavy-wire hooks at home before adding to my 'misc tools' pocket for the canoe...these will be in the tool box on the F-9 1 Quote

Smells like fish Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 I’ve saw Shimano branded cutters out there if anybody is interested Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted April 13, 2022 Super User Posted April 13, 2022 I've broke the handles on a set of Gerbers and Leatherman tools trying to cut a 5/0 hook in a guys leg. I now carry Crescent compound cutters. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted April 13, 2022 Global Moderator Posted April 13, 2022 Why exactly are y’all cutting through the hooks? I’m guessing it’s either to get the rest of the lure away from yourself or cutting it after pushing all the way thru. I’ve been hooked more times than I can keep track of. We only cut the hook one of those times and I don’t think it was a necessary part of the removal process, although I was 13 years old that time so I may not have the details quite straight haha. I know it was a buzz bait so I believe they cut it so I wouldn’t be buzzing around. My neighbor actually fainted when he cut through it ! Then mom drove me to a doctor/fisherman friends house and he numbed with ice cube and just backed the heavy wire hook with barb right out, no pain and barely any blood. I think he said most of the time you can back the hook out the exact way it went in, I guess that’s the theory behind the braid trick (minus the speed). I really need to learn that braid trick but i don’t want to hook myself to practice side note: @GreenPigis big strong dude, if he is breaking pliers torquing a hooked leg, going to need anesthesia Quote

Super User Catt Posted April 13, 2022 Super User Posted April 13, 2022 When the need raises I don't believe in playing around! CHANNELLOCK® 8" Xtreme Leverage Technology (XLT™) 1 Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted April 13, 2022 Super User Posted April 13, 2022 Compound bolt cutters like Knipex or equivalent. Regular side cutters are marginal at best. When you need to cut a hook quickly with only one hand available because the other hand is hooked to a thrashing fish you will understand. 1 1 Quote
Skunkmaster-k Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 I carry a Leatherman super tool 300. It would work in a pinch , but I’d rather have bolt cutters. Quote

padlin Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 How about this baby to replace my little side cutters. Seriously, I should get some SS cutters, mine keep rusting. 2 Quote

Jmilburn76 Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 I didn't even realize they made mini-bolt cutters.I need a pair of them for my kayak. My biggest fear is somehow getting my right hand hooked and since my left hand only partially works I wouldn't be able to cut myself free. Is there a decent pair that's budget priced? Quote

The compound bolt cutter concept actually started with the musky community. Those guys cut hooks to quicken the release and a thrashing fish over 20 lbs gets everybody’s attention especially if it is hooked to you. Quote

If a fish is hooked to me and flopping, his catch and release privileges have been revoked. I think I could bonk it quicker than I could find my side cutter Granted I’ve never caught a muskie and you don’t bonk those, I guess I would be reaching for all kinds of unhooking/cutting tools with long handles if i did 1 Quote

You could go barbless and squash a lot of that fear, they stay hooked fairly well on them. Especially in the kayak when dodging ability is limited haha 1 Quote

Ive got a set of side cutters I keep on my yak, these bolt cutters just look like they don't play around! Quote
