All - Looking for insight on which rod I should choose. Either brand I will be getting a 7ft MH/F for Texas rigging soft plastics. Thanks I’m advance.

Dobyns ratings are on the light side IMO. A M/H is closer to a Medium rating in my experience. A 5 (heavy) power on Dobyns scale is what I consider M/H.

Call Dobyns to talk to a rep and explain what weights/baits you’ll be throwing and go from there. You’ll be talking to a human within a minute or two.  1 (903) 919-8028

I’m a Dobyns fan boy, (I own 9 of them) but there are a lot of good rods in the $150 range.

Daiwa, Shimano, Ark, Dobyns, St Croix……..The world is your oyster.

Phenix K2 or St. Croix Legend Xtreme rods.  I understand that this reply isn't directly responsive to your original query but you should at least do some research into these two product lines.  Excellent stuff.

You just offered suggestions for $600 rods in response to a query about rods priced at $100 and $150. Imma need to see like some human hands to prove you ain’t the bait monkey ?

I've got the Fury 704C for jigs, T-rigs and other bottom-contact techniques. I like it and think it would work good for you.

I would lean to the Fury personally.  I have several Mojo Bass rods in both spinning and casting.  I will give credit where credit is due, they are workhorses for their price but I have had to replace a few guides the last couple of years.  I even found one on a rack at the store one day that had a ring missing from one of the guides.  It's not a deal breaker for me, I have some experience building rods so replacing a guide is what it is but...........I treated myself to a Dobyns Champion XP last year and fell in love with it.  This led me to check out the Fury in store as it is similarly priced to the Mojo Bass.  That "cheaper" Fury still has that "Dobyn's" feel, and I prefer that over the Mojo Bass.  I know for me, my next budget rod will be a fury over the Mojo Bass.

Today there are some state of the art rods available in the $170 price to consider.

SC Victory are available with 10-15% discount bring the $190 price within the $170 range. VTC 71MHF is 3.5 oz and constructed like custom my custom rods with short beveled fore grip cork split grip.

Dobyns Kaden K714C is good and the Sierra series is within $170, less for a refurbished rod.

5s are Mag Heavy and 4s are Heavy. It's the 4s that are more like M/H. The 3s are what Dobyns labels M/H but fish like a Medium.

Limiting it to those two choices ( Fury or Mojo) I would suggest the Dobyns and ask what you are planning to throw with it. I personally think the Mojo rods feel a little heavy to me. I have a couple Mojo MH/MF Spinnerbait rods I really like for things like a smaller Whopper Ploppers or light Chatterbaits, but feel the Dobyns are a little better balanced for fishing bottom baits like texas rigged plastics.

The reason I ask what you're planning to throw with it is Dobyns run a little lighter than their ratings, so their MH (703c) is more like a lighter MH. Their Heavy (704) is more like a heavier MH. So if you're going to throw 1/4 x 3/8 oz with light plastucs, I'd go Dobyns 703C. If you are thinking of throwing 3/8 x 1/2 oz,... I'd bump it up to the 704C.

You're correct on the labeling, but I'm in agreement with NavyToad when it comes to feel. A 5 power dobyns feels like a MH to me, with the exception of the flippin sticks. They feel true to their ratings IMO.

I appreciate the info sir. Good to know about their customer service.

I’ve been using all Dobyns fury rods since they first came out. The 704 or 734 will do the job. I’ve never fished the mojo bass but felt them and I just feel the Dobyns is a better overall rod

I own several examples of both brands.

If you could swing it I'd try and wait on a Dobyns sale and get a Sierra 734c

I'm not sure what kind of warranty the Dobyn's rod has, but St Croix has fantastic warranties and customer service, should you ever need to replace/repair it.

I just bought a 7 foot St Croix Mojo BC rod about a month ago.  Won't be using it until May.

Between those two, Dobyns hands down. The Fury line actually runs a little stiffer and closer to their ratings than other lines in the Dobyns family. The 734 is the best all around jig/worm in the Fury series IMO.

This a new one for me. I've never seen anyone feel like the 5s are a M/H here or the Dobyns Facebook page. Can't say for real life since I only know of my son and I who use them. At 1/4-1oz H/F the 4s scream M/H. The 5s are Mags at 3/8-1 1/2oz. They're frog and jig rods.

The higher up in the line you go the worse it is IMO. I have the 746 Extreme HP and it feels like a MH +/mod fast at best to me. It's labeled flip/pitch and that may be true for docks or isolated cover.

I would never dream of using it in heavy vegetation here in FL.

I own 3 Fury rods, and like them for a bunch of things, bottom t-rigging is not one of them, so I'm going with the St Croix in this case.

Ratings are subjective and all over the place from company to company. My ARK Tharp Money Maker, 7'3" Mag MH, and Abu Veritas 7'3" MH are both more powerful rods than the Fury 735. Especially the ARK, it's similar in power to a Dobyns 5 power Flippin stick.

I in the same camp, I have three St. Croix Mojo's and a bunch of Dobyn's.  I think the Sierra series is one heck of a step up better then the Fury. I like the Mojo's better then the Fury rods also.  Both St. Croix and Dobyn's are quality rod makers. I really don't think you can go wrong either way. I just feel that the Fury isn't as nice a rod and the Mojo bass rods are.

I bought a Fury 703 last year and returned it for a Mojo Bass.  IMO the Mojo Bass was much more sensitive that the Dobyns.  Plus I would prefer a rod made in Mexico than China.

Either.  You'll have a decent spinnerbait rod.

I agree with @WRB.  If you can save and wait a bit, I think you will be so much happier with a Victory for bottom contact.

I have a Dobyns 703C and a St. Croix Mojo Yak.

I like both of them.

But none come close to comparing with my Exprides.
