I’m going fishing in saltwater for the first time and I don’t have a sw designated setup. I have a dobyns fury with a saltwater rated reel that I use for bass and I was wondering if I should risk using the rod.

You should be OK if you wash it with fresh water, see Ardent Reel Care thread in this forum.

Used my freshwater rods and reels in the salt 3 to 4 times per week. Just rinse em off with fresh water from the garden hose, read gentle stream. Never had any issues.

I use freshwater gear all the time.

You already have a saltwater rated reel, so you've pretty much have a saltwater rig. I don't know what kind of line guides Dobyns uses, but a rinse with freshwater when you're done will do the trick.

There's a major overlap between inshore gear and bass gear, anyway.

7' rods +/-, MH, ML, finesse...

Some heavy bass rods are faster for specific niches, especially deep - inshore is usually no more than 3' deep.

When I saltwater fish with my buddy, I use my Duckett freshwater spinning rod and swap out the President reel for a Penn Battle ll spooled with Stren clear 10lb.  Rinse with fresh water afterwards and I've never had a problem.

Interestingly, I seem to catch more than the others on the boat.  I attribute it to better sensitivity.  Target fish are reds and trout.  Flounder are by catch since NC regs are draconian.
