ghost Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 Just wondering what ya'll using for your line for your BFS baitcast reel(s). I have the Curado BFS reel with 15/4 yellow Power Pro. And also have A Kastking Zephyr, Abu Garcia Revo X with aftermarket BFS spool and a Daiwa Tatula CT with aftermarket spool; all spooled with 10/2 yellow Power Pro line. I tried 4 lb P-Line CXX at first but did not like how it handled on the KK Zephyr. All my reels are straight braid, and I color so many feet of the yellow braid with a black Sharpie. 1 Quote

Tatulatard Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 10# flouro or 20# braid. If I go below that then it's a 10# braid minimum. Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted April 4, 2022 Super User Posted April 4, 2022 Duel X-wire remains my favorite braid on baitcaster, I'm fishing down to PE#0.8 It's offered in 5-color that changes every 10 m, and silver with no marks. X-wire seems to have the same hard fluopolymer coating as Varivas High Grade, which I'm using on a spinning reel in PE#0.6. Yamatoyo Resin Sheller hardcoat in PE#1 is on my 4600 AMO spool, and fishes quite well, though the X-wire coating is more abrasion-resistant. Several of my friends are fishing 10-lb Sufix 832 with no complaints. BaitFinesseEmpire, btw, stocks a range of Varivas, including High Grade x8 in PE#0.6 5 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted April 4, 2022 Super User Posted April 4, 2022 Not exactly BFS but I have a Daiwa Steez CT. I use 8lb Sunline Sniper Invisible. 1 Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted April 4, 2022 Super User Posted April 4, 2022 Sunline Sniper 7 lb fluorocarbon. It sinks whereas braid does not. When trying to get ultra light lures down into the desired strike zone for the longest period of time, FC helps IMO. Quote

Was just curious if that means backlashing in the beginning, middle, or end of the cast. My zephyr is fussy in general and magnets are weaker than most other low profile bfs reels. Lighter lures usually prefer MORE magnets and heavier ones require less with more tension. 4 hours ago, bulldog1935 said: Several of my friends are fishing 10-lb Sufix 832 with no complaints. Not super into bfs fishing as you are but is that old abu spool made by amo? How's the quality If so of the aftermarket spool. I have a beautiful 5600 and was thinking about getting their 10 gram one for 3/16th-3/8 standard bass lures. 1 Quote

It doesn't take much to improve over the mass and inertia of stock Ambassadeur spools, and you'll be floored with the improvement - it will change the nature of the reel, especially all the modes of backlash. You can accompany that with polishing of the idler gear and worm gear bushings and mating spindles (or make the upgrade to BB parts). Mike's zirconia pawl is a worthwhile upgrade to reduce LW mass (doesn't work on 1500 or 2500). The mag brake above is Avail, which you really only need for the light stuff (to set it for the AMO spool, each individual magnet got 1/4 CW turn) BTW, if you search ceramic pawl, you'll find a supplier from a different store in the same Chinese website (if I mention the website, the post will have to be moderated) My 1500C from Don Iovino already had the Avail BB upgrades, but still cast like an Ambassadeur with heavy stock spool, and needed centrifugal brake. When I swapped-in Avail 1520 microcast spool (8 g), it became a different animal, and never again needed centrifugal. I do run 2/6 centrifugal shoes on the 4600C3 I show in my first photos, but my target is casting 1/2 oz. The AMO spool gave it the ability to cast 3 g (3/29 oz). Thankyou so much for this information!!! Will look at these options for sure!!! Beautiful reels, something romantic about old abu style reels, will upgrade mine with these reccomendations. 1 Quote

You can get the AMO spool from AliExpress, available for the 4000 and 5000 sized Ambassadeurs. 2 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted April 4, 2022 Super User Posted April 4, 2022 What @redmeansdistortion said - look there for AMO Official Store. Though from the wording of his question, sounds like he already found it. 1 Quote
redmeansdistortion Posted April 4, 2022 Posted April 4, 2022 I have an AMO in my 6.3 Alphas, my panfish reel. The spool weighs a whooping 4.6g. It's a riot throwing small paddle tails. A 1" Slider grub on a 1g Major Craft Jigpara darter head is absolutely deadly on the gills and perch. I fish that one with 6lb X9 as well but run a 3lb Maxima leader. AMO is very legit, I find their offerings to be of higher quality than Ray's Studio. I can't comment on AMO vs Roro, as I have never owned one (yet). Don't get me wrong, Ray's makes nice spools, just not as nice. Plus I like the AMO Daiwa spools come with a fixed inductor, perfect for short range pitching. The docks along the canals of Lake St Clair are packed with big gills and crappies this time of year, it's a dock fishing machine. It also does well with the trout, but I don't throw that light for those and like the SLP spool better. 1 1 Quote

Awesome info, I have been panfishing as well the past few outings, I find panfishing is best in the bass spawn and they get super aggressive as they don't have to worry about getting munched by bass as much that time of year, daredevls have been my lure of choice, man I love spoons so much, they are becoming my favorite search bait even over all the advanced cranks and chatters... something fun about the colors of feel of hucking them Quote
WC53 Posted April 5, 2022 Posted April 5, 2022 Suffix 832 10lb PP. 6lb only reason I had big spools of each… if you are trying to throw UL you need a really thin and light line as the air resistance makes a huge difference. 4-6g is where I tend to live and both do great. 2-1/2 is as low as I like. I tried 20lb Berkley, too heavy. Just bought some Varivas but haven’t spooled it yet. Quote
KP Duty Posted April 5, 2022 Posted April 5, 2022 6lb pline cxx or trilene xl depending on what bait I'm throwing. Surprisingly....both are .009" 1 Quote

Super User Darth-Baiter Posted April 5, 2022 Super User Posted April 5, 2022 8lb flouro. My shop only had Berkeley line this time. So I’m giving it a go. Quote
