Joedodge Posted April 2, 2022 Posted April 2, 2022 What pound fluorocarbon leader is everyone generally using? And about how long are you all making them? Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted April 2, 2022 Super User Posted April 2, 2022 What test braid are you tying it to - what techniques are you using this on. If I use a leader...don't always: H/F or MH/F casting - 40# or 50# braid to 15# FC MH Spinning 20# braid to 12# FC ML Spinning 10# braid to 6# FC Quote

On spinning with 10-20 lb braid I will use 6-8 lb flouro leader. The leader length I use varies. I will start with 20 ft length. This will bring the knot onto the spool which many do not recommend. If it works, great; if not I shorten the leader to 5 ft. The problems I’ve encountered are not the knot going through the guides, but the tag end of the flouro hanging up on the braid on the spool. If I can trim this close enough it works fine at 20 ft. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted April 2, 2022 Super User Posted April 2, 2022 10lb on spinning and 15lb on casting. 6-8ft long. Quote

Do you guys try to match diameters or use pound test when selecting a leader? The reason I ask is that I have a H/F casting setup spooled with 65# braid and debating what size leader to use for moderate to heavy cover (tules, grass, submerged brush) fishing jigs and TRigs. Our club does not fish waters with this type of cover very often. Would a 12# leader be too light for this? Quote

Joedodge Posted April 2, 2022 Author Posted April 2, 2022 Thanks everyone!! In saltwater I’m used to 2-3 feet of leader I never expected to hear 10 or 20!!! Quote
Super User Bird Posted April 2, 2022 Super User Posted April 2, 2022 I use a leader the length of my rod. Spinning - 8lb Sunline sniper Casting - 12lb Sunline sniper Quote
newapti5 Posted April 2, 2022 Posted April 2, 2022 It all depends on the fishing situation, but I believe you know that already. In my case, fishing rocky bottom river, with no much vegetation, and clear water, I used 6~9 feet leaders, no less than 8 pound on spinning, but no more than 15 pound on casting. Besides poundage, I also pay attention to diameters. For example, the Seaguar STS leader is tough and cheap, but it's thicker than blue/gold label. 12 pound STS is as thick as 15 pound of blue label. Super User MickD Posted April 2, 2022 Super User Posted April 2, 2022 I use 15 or less for braid, (or Hitena 20 which casts like most 10's) 14 pound fly tippet FC for leader. I find anything less than 10# leader to be too fragile. I've not found any techique or water clarity that requires me to go lighter. I'll be looking to make sure I'm not wrong, but so far. . . Quote

Super User Jig Man Posted April 2, 2022 Super User Posted April 2, 2022 I normally use 12# and somewhere around 90 yards. Quote

So for example 65lb Sufix 832 is .016 and the next down in Seaguar Gold Label is 20lb at .014..... but you could do 15lb easily. 1 Quote
