I am going through a phase where I'm buying different brands of snaps/snap swivels to see how they perform. I picked up these two today, vmc snaps and "Norman speed clips" anyone have any thoughts? Have these ever failed, come undone when using?

Snaps or clips are not snap swivels. It’s added size and weight of the swivel most bass anglers try to avoid.

Berkley Cross lock snaps are very strong, Owner Hyper Weld snaps are light and strong.

IMO Speed clips are a pita to use.

Before SPRO was known for their crankbaits, their claim to fame was bucktails and both snaps and swivels.  Industry leader for a number of years and still preferred by many.

I've used Norman speed clips for years. The only reason I use them is because that's what I started with, they're cheap, and they're readily available. They can be hard to use when it's really cold, when your fingers are soaked, when you're wearing gloves, etc. You can make the mistake of thinking you've got them all the way engaged when they're not if you're half-blind like me.

Why do you need a swivel?

I don’t use swivels of any sort. When I was a teenager I would use them religiously. After watching my buddy using same lure, same color and same line he was out fishing 5 to 1. I was very puzzled but then I did sn experiment in the water watching the action. The action changes significantly when you tie a swivel on. I just tie lure straight to line from now on. The lures perform better this way.

I use swivels in three situations.

C-Rig

Donkey Rig

Inline Spinner

Otherwise, swivels are not on my line.

I don’t use on any of these used to use on inline spinners but felt it hinders action. Found I get better spin without swivel.

I actually used just a snap today with a couple inline spinners and man...they were twisting the line up bad. Personally I have not noticed any decrease in feel or action from them when I use a snap swivel, but each person has a different experience. I would say out of all the lures, I use inline spinners the most by far lol. I'm an addict, I must have 50 or 60 different styles, sizes, and brands ? but hey they produce for me so

I use the Mustard Fastach which comes with or without a swivel:

Incidentally, this is also the setup on the Chatterbait Freedom Series that attaches the hook to the head and allows the "freedom":

Oh yeah a couple people mentioned the mustad fastach. I tried looking for them at a couple stores but it seems I will have to order them

They work really well for me. I take the split rings off of my baits and use this instead. I've never had one to break on me. I snagged a bait up and slightly deformed one but even then it was still useable.

I really like these on my poppers and shower blows.

After some thought and fishing this weekend?, I realized I do use snaps in one application….Blade Baits.  The multiple locations to tie off to and the unfinished metal of the blade make it a requirement.
