Today’s Finesse bait casting has evolved to extreme finesse bait casting.

Don Iovino’s Finesse bait casting Major Craft Splash-It 6’8” medium fast rod coupled with Shimano SLX MGL 70 reel with 6# Copolymer line makes a good price friendly finesse bait caster that cast 1/8 oz total weight lures effectively.

If your goal is going lighter lure weights you are getting into extreme BFS combo’s IMO for bass fishing.

I put together a Curado 70 MLG with a Curado 6'10" med-fast rod.  It's main purpose is to cast wacky rigs because I was sick of line twist issues with them on spinning gear.

Shimano offers a BFS rod in the Curado line (C72ML BFSA ).  Nice rods for the money.

Have you looked at the JDM tackle websites in Japan?  The U.S. dollar is about as high as it's been in years to the JP yen.

So, my wife was good enough to purchase me a starter BFS rig for my birthday.  I encouraged her to go cheap and I gave her a few suggestions and she got me the Shimano Sensilite rod (7' L power with a F action) and the Tsurinoya Dark Wolf Ultra casting reel.  I'll probably put 5 pound fluoro on it, but may mess around with 4-6 pound mono or 8-10 pound braid (not sure if that's going to be too thin).

I really am looking forward to messing around with it as I do "finesse fish" about 80 or 90% of the time and this will almost surely make certain presentations a bit easier.  Not sure that I'm going to need to go hog-wild on BFS style lures, but I'll probably look at purchasing a few just for fun.

Obviously I'm still interested in suggestions and tips and I'll continue to peruse the forum for other interesting threads about BFS tackle and tactics.

I do admit to being somewhat disturbed by the idea of purchasing Chinese fishing tackle, not because of the quality, but because of the politics.   I simply couldn't justify $300-600 for a "budget" starter BFS combo though given that I'm not sure I'll even enjoy the technique.   Even if I DO enjoy it immensely, I currently carry as many as 15 rods in my boat and I don't believe any of the combos ran me more than $200 or so and I feel like my present gear is definitely adequate.  I even looked at what the minimum cost would be for an inexpensive but quality setup and it looked like a Curado BFS reel on a Dobyn's light action casting rod would run close to $350, but after investigating, I found that the Dobyn's rods are also made in China.  I have no problem with the quality of some Chinese goods and I have no problem with the Chinese people, but I surely wish we had American/Japanese/European options as well (especially American).
