When using your smaller swimbaits without the benefit of using electronics - where do you usually start your retrieve depth ? I've generally thought best to run swimbaits slowly just above the bottom to begin . If I'm getting bit as the swimbait is descending then I may adjust and retrieve the swimbait higher in the water column ... Your thoughts and experiences with swimbait running depths ?

When fishing structure, I approach it as you described. When fishing cover I generally swim it along just under the surface and kill it and let it fall down into openings in the cover.

Luddite here.  I like @ChrisD46 plan of attack and do the same.  If I get bit on the fall, I also try a moping or hair jig technique mid column and can sometimes keep the bite alive.
