Super User Bird Posted March 26, 2022 Super User Posted March 26, 2022 Have always done well with Neds in the clear water lakes around here. Only have one complaint and it's that they get hung more often than I like. I've never been a fan of wire weed guards so decided to give these 1/16 heads a try. Think hookup ratio will suffer ? New vs old. Quote

I also have the Nichols but haven't thrown it yet. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Gambler_Power_Ned_Weedless_Screw_Lock_Jig_Heads_3pk/descpage-GPN.html https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Nichols_JT_Magnum_Weedless_Ned_Rig_Jig_Head_3pk/descpage-NJTMW.html scott 1 Quote

Super User gim Posted March 27, 2022 Super User Posted March 27, 2022 There’s this thing called a tiny child rig. It’s a weed less Ned rig. I’ve never fished it and the name is questionable too, but some people say it works the best in weeds without sacrificing hook ups. 3 Quote

Not a big fan of elaztech with that style hook but something like the X Zone Ned Zone or Zoom Beatdown work very well. 2 Quote

And my ratio may have gone down because I tend to fish Neds on ultralight BFS set-ups where it's not all that possible to whack 'em with a vigorous hook set to get the hook point through the Elaztech. I guess weedless Neds need to be fished on slightly heavier gear than I've used. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted March 28, 2022 Global Moderator Posted March 28, 2022 I just started using wire weed guards in the last year or two, I love them. Not on mushroom jig heads, just regular ball heads 1 Quote
ISuckAtBassFishingBoise Posted March 28, 2022 Posted March 28, 2022 It just depends where I'm at and how I'm fishing. I've had more success with texas rigging a elaztech ned with bullet style weights than those mushroom ewg hooks. If there is some depth and I'm bouncing it I like the standard z-man weedless finesse shroomz. You have to bend back the wire weedguard when you catch something but if your bending it out over weeds then your pulling too hard. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 28, 2022 Global Moderator Posted March 28, 2022 I got the EWG Ned mold last year and used it a lot with small plastics and the hookup ratio was excellent. I haven't tried it with Zman baits though. 1 Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted March 29, 2022 Posted March 29, 2022 I have a good hookup ratio when I use offset neds, but I feel like I get more bites using a standard style ball/ned head with a small hook, especially in clear water. If your using shorter ned baits like the TRD or short robo ned go with the smallest hook possible. The Owner finesse ball heads in #1 are small enough that they dont overpower the bait. I haven't used them yet, but I would imagine the Zman offsets would work really well. I've tried Flatlands and Lifteds ned heads as well. Ironically I prefer the VMC 1/0 on the lifted head in comparison to the Gami 1/0 on the Flatland only because the VMC hook has a slightly shorter shank, so it matches with smaller plastics a little better. 2 Quote

If you are trying to fish in actual weeds, the EWG have been disappointing to me, but 1/16 ball heads with two little mono guards have been outstanding. They are either Owner or Decoy. Just lays on the weeds, and even if it gets stuck it's pretty easy to finesse it out without a bunch of salad on it. A size 1 or 2 hook is important though. For wood, hard to beat the EWG though. Just find the smallest hook you can. I haven't noticed a difference in hookup, although it's been a while since I fished a ned more than 20 minutes. Important that you are skin-hooking at most though, I wouldn't want to try to push the hook through elaztech. 1 Quote
waldo567 Posted March 30, 2022 Posted March 30, 2022 I just rig them like in this video. No need for different jig heads. Works for me very well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6Mh0nDFCT4 1 Quote

cal9323 Posted March 31, 2022 Posted March 31, 2022 I strictly use them when fishing TRD’s. I never have any hookup issues or snagging anymore. I love them. The only issue with them is that is can tear up the TRD’s some. That’s why I only use the Z-Man with them as they hold up better. 1 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted April 2, 2022 Super User Posted April 2, 2022 I’m just now responding because I hadn’t used the weedless until yesterday. Mine are very similar to what Mike Siebert has. I used TRDs fishing an area where I lost 15 regular heads last fall. I lost 2 of the weedless jigs in that area. I caught 27 bass up to 4# on them. Every fish was hooked in the roof of the mouth. None were close to gut hooked. I even managed a grand slam (lmb, smb, spots and a mean mouth). My first impression is that they are good. 2 Quote
