Super User jbsoonerfan Posted March 25, 2022 Super User Posted March 25, 2022 I live out in the middle of the sticks. We have tried every internet available I think. We have found nothing that works for all 6 of us. The last few months we have had 4 hotspots in our house that we are paying $320 a month for. Last year, around Jan or so we signed up for Starlink. We got our equipment today and set it up outside (not permanent) just to see how it performs. I ran a speed test using my T-Mobile hotspot and my download speed was 1.76 Mbps, I then ran it after connecting to Starlink and it ran 26 Mbps. My son is gettin 39 Mbps on his PS4. If you live in an area and have to rely on satellite or mobile data, I would strongly consider Starlink. *I am NOT paid by Elon Musk (but if he would like to send me money, I will accept it) LOL 2 Quote
CountryboyinDC Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 That's a big improvement for your speed. I have a neighbor who put down the deposit to try to get it at one of his vacation homes in a rural area (Pennsylvania). I don't believe he's got ot yet. I think that a good source of internet will get a lot of people to move out of the suburbs. 40 MBPS is not exactly blazing fast for families who need 2 people to be able to virtually conference, maybe a kid who wants to online game and another that wants to stream Hulu. That's a lot better than Hughesnet, though. Quote
Super User gim Posted March 25, 2022 Super User Posted March 25, 2022 6 people using it at once is a lot for a residence. I have the fastest connection available where I live (1 GIG/second) through Centurylink, but I live in the suburbs too, not exactly out in the "sticks." My parents had to use dial-up when they first moved out into a rural area in 2001 because high speed was not available. What a disaster that was. 1 Quote
InfantryMP Posted March 25, 2022 Posted March 25, 2022 Starlink just raised prices too. The initial deposit is now like $700. I used 4G AT&T signal through a modem at my last house out in the middle of nowhere. It worked great for streaming Netflix. My son would game on it too, but you could not do both at the same time well. Quote

What a disaster that was. Just think - when I started doing online things, it was using a 2400 baud (2.4k) dial-up modem. They keep telling us we'll get 1gig service out on the Island...4 years now of that and we're still limited to 100mb as the top speed available. 1 Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted March 25, 2022 Super User Posted March 25, 2022 I got my first 300 baud modem around 1985. You could read the text faster than it would come across the network. If you're old you've heard of CompuServ, Gopher, Usenet. Before there was a bassresource.com there was the fishing forum on Usenet. Quote

txchaser Posted March 26, 2022 Posted March 26, 2022 Starlink is legit, the farm was 3mbps when the wind blew right, and now holds around 120mbps. Definitely worth the extra $50/mo if you can swing it. Quote
softwateronly Posted March 26, 2022 Posted March 26, 2022 I'm glad Elon is doing this, but in our rich country "high speed" internet should be a public utility, as available as a reliable power grid. scott 5 Quote
schplurg Posted March 26, 2022 Posted March 26, 2022 I don't like the fact that Musk is sending up tens of thousands of satellites to do this and neither do astronomers. I'm not a big fan because of that. And what...a $700 deposit? Quote NASA has warned that SpaceX's plan for 30,000 more Starlink satellites could cause problems for science missions, human spaceflight, the Hubble telescope, and ground-based telescopes that look for asteroids that might hit the Earth. Great! 1 Quote
Super User Koz Posted March 27, 2022 Super User Posted March 27, 2022 I live out in the middle of nowhere and have only one local option for internet - 10MB DSL. I hate it. I'll have to download the Starlink app and see if I can get service in this area yet. It stink the increase to $700 is more about recovering losses from sending all of that free equipment to Ukraine rather than price gouging or inflation. Quote

LEO is certainly getting crowded, but lets not forget that the USAF and other space nations haven't had much of a custodial concern for the last 60 years. I'm not a Musk fanboy, but I do think he's interesting and mostly big picture pragmatic. Last I read, they made a starlink redesign to decrease reflectivity in an order of magnitude to allow ground based telescopes the ability to see past. The benefit of global hs internet is worth the engineering challenges. I hope they find a way to play nice. scott Quote

I took a time lapse of the night sky while I was backpacking a few weeks ago. {Edit} These are not Musk's satellites I was mistaken All through the video you can see that some "stars" do not move across the sky with the rest. Those are Musk's satellites ruining the shot. They are geostationary and stay in one place relative to the rotation of the Earth. One shot has maybe a dozen satellites too, not just one. Astronomers are really happy about it too. I think he's a ****** but with a name like Elon Musk how could he not be? Enjoy your porn! Quote

You can look at the following link for some geostationary satellites: https://www.n2yo.com/satellites/?c=10 Quote

I did this several years ago with no issues. They look evenly spaced out like a grid almost. I'll have to look into this some more. Edit to add: I still think he's what I said he is Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted July 22, 2022 Super User Posted July 22, 2022 Been patiently waiting for Starlink. I had not heard about the deposit increase. That stinks....I was procrastinating getting on the list since the available date kept slipping. I have Viasat now, and while speeds are OK, I'm paying much more than Starlink monthly. The biggest reason I can't wait to switch is the data limits. When we hit 100GB, we get throttled back to 1996 dialup speeds until the end of the month. Satellite is the only viable option I know of until some sort of ground based rural broadband infrastructure becomes available. Honestly, I don't know how folks out here managed during the remote schooling/working days of the pandemic. Not many can afford satellite internet. Quote
Trox Posted July 24, 2022 Posted July 24, 2022 ... I recently went flounder gigging miles away from mainland a little after midnight... You can actually see those satellites flying around if there is zero light pollution, and they're fast... one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Quote
