detroit1 Posted March 21, 2022 Posted March 21, 2022 Bummer for you Minnesota folk, no targeting pike, walleye, or bass until the middle of may ? Geeez! 1 Quote

So even though it may be that the rules, you're not going to get fined or jail for it. Doesn't make it legal, kinda like I'll rob banks if I think I can get away with it. 4 hours ago, J Francho said: There's some misinformation propagating here. First off, the black bass catch and release season applies to all but Region 5 (Franklin County) where targeting black bass is forbidden out of season. Is the St Lawrence around Clayton ok to target bass in closed season/C&R or whatever they are calling it? Quote

Bass season used to open the weekend of Memorial Day until about 10 years ago, when they changed it so that you can specifically target them for catch/release when the primary gamefish season opens for walleye/northern pike (this year it opens on May 14). Harvest of them is still not permitted until the Saturday prior to Memorial Day. So at least we did gain 2 weeks out of it. Muskie season doesn’t open here until the second Saturday in June. Quote

I highly doubt it. Our BASS Nation state team had questions regarding practice for the regional tournament we are fishing end of June and this was the answer we received.. "DURING THE OFF-LIMITS PERIOD JUNE 13-18 YOU MAY NOT BE ON THE ST LAWRENCE RIVER (US OR CANADIAN SIDE) BETWEEN THE EASTERN AND WESTERN TOURNAMENT BOUNDARIES. DURING THE OFFICIAL PRACTICE AND COMPETITION, YOU MAY ONLY BE ON THE US SIDE TO FISH. IF YOU STRAY INTO CANADIAN WATERS WHILE NAVIGATING THE BORDER PORTIONS OF THE ST.LAWRENCE, YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK. YOU MAY GET STOPPED BY CANADIAN OFFICIALS AND MORE THAN LIKELY WOULD BE REQUIRED TO RELEASE ALL SMALLMOUTH BASS, DUE TO THE CLOSED SEASON ON SMALLMOUTH IN CANADA." Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 22, 2022 Super User Posted March 22, 2022 P. 65 in the guide I linked above has the details. It's definitely off limits until 3rd Saturday in June around Clayton. Quote

The official reason is that populations aren't strong enough to handle the fishing pressure. Oy. Quote

We moved from NYC to VA back in '98, only fished up that way maybe a dozen times a year since. Coincidentally, just got a text from my brother that his new fresh water buddies are going to school me on St Lawrence smallies in May, gonna be a good Christmas... Quote
ironbjorn Posted March 26, 2022 Posted March 26, 2022 Using a gun to kill something out of season and being busted for it and is about as far as things go anymore. Nobody cares about a guy throwing a line. Depending on where you are located your boat might be approached demanding a license but even that is rare. You shouldn't break the law but I'm just saying with confidence almost nobody cares and unless you're a spectacular idiot you'll never get in trouble. I have a neighbor who told me he tied the Vermont state record largemouth, but it was a few days before he could keep it. But there were some state guys working there and they saw him catch it and weighed it for him. This happened in a lake I lost an absolute giant too. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted April 1, 2022 Super User Posted April 1, 2022 Different states with different rules but I always wanted to know the answer to this. Merryland really doesn't care about any fish except stocked trout and stripers. I do like that PA has a rule against bed fishing. Allen 1 Quote

Obligatory lol @ man trying to dictate a god given resource If Man wasn't so good at destroying everything we wouldn't need these rules, whether it be crab, salmon, trout, clean air...each other. Where I live the rules are taken seriously and I'm glad they are. I'd like to see much more enforcement. I've been checked for barbless hooks and artificial bait where applicable, as well as my fishing license. I'd like to see people breaking these laws ticketed and repeat offenders banned from fishing. They are often the ones leaving the litter as well. There are too many jerks not to have rules, unfortunately. 1 Quote

I agree with limits so the bucket squatters don't destroy the fisheries more than they so often do in smaller waters. I personally strictly practice catch and release. People who litter are trash themselves. The problem I have is telling people when they can and can't catch a fish. Quote

I'm sure we'll get into a "they don't own the land thing" but "technically" its the state's land. They aren't telling people when they can and can't catch a fish, they are telling them when they can and can't catch a fish on their land ... don't like their schedule? fish private waters Quote

I think its safe to say that we would all like to see more of that. There really isn't enough conservation officers or water patrol out there to enforce all of the existing laws. People poach and litter because they think there is a remote chance of being caught. 1 Quote
