Hey guys, I’m looking for a dedicated 3/4oz to 1oz football jig rod. I will be using this rod to cast long distances and drag football jigs in various water depths. Now, I do have a GLX 844C MBR, Dobyns Champion Extreme 745HP, and even a GLX 954 FPR. I find that the 844C and DX 745 are fantastic rods. However, I feel like they are slightly underpowered for 3/4oz and 1oz football jigs, in my opinion, but they can get the job done without any problems. For instance, the DX 745 isn’t as powerful as you are led on to believe from reading the specs. As for the GLX 954 FPR, I’m aware that it wasn’t designed for dragging footballs but have tried fishing football jigs with it, anyways, and it’s a tip heavy pool cue, so I can’t fish with it comfortably all day. It’s simply just too powerful and too long.

Anyways, I’m looking for a rod that is between 7’ – 7’ 6” that can handle 3/4oz football jigs and the occasional 1oz. I’m looking for a rod that is perhaps a half power stronger than DX 745 but don’t want a pool cue.

The GLX 855 JWR has piqued my interest, but there are not many reviews on this rod. Anyways, I don’t want to be one track minded and be able to make the best choice. As you know, reading specs isn’t always reliable as each manufacturer has their own ratings, so I need your guys’ help from your guys’ experience. I’m looking for a rod with enough power to be capable of handling heavy football jigs that are dragging across bottom but can also effectively deflect the jigs off of rocks while simultaneously not being a broomstick. In addition, I’d like this rod to be super sensitive to detect what my jig is making contact with on the bottom and to easily distinguish it from a fish bite.

Which rod would you recommend for a high end 3/4oz and 1oz football jig?

Doesn't Dobyns make a DX 746.    Sounds like you really like your 745 DX a lot so stepping it up a power might be the ticket.  Don't own a Dobyns rod persona;;y so I could be completely wrong.

Since you said high end, I prefer the NRX for everything except the heavy stuff where I use the Steez 7’2” H which is a great rod.  I had the 7’6” H Z Bone before the Steez and while it was a good rod, I prefer the Steez.

ALX Zolo Dragger, 7’4”  rod or Enox Shock, 7’8” rod. Both design for 1/2-1 oz football jigs.

Alex can make you a custom rod to the exact specs you want.

Not out yet but the Megabass P5 BMG should do the trick.  I have the Super Destroyer and it's not my favorite jig rod but it can handle a 3/4oz jig with trailer pretty easily.  It's just a tad short and soft for bigger jigs. It is magical for just about everything else.

I have 3 Medium to High end rods that I would personally use and really enjoy, but I usually top out at 3/4oz grass jigs in cover.

Expride 173XH

Megabass Tequila Baccarac

Diawa Steez 172H Power Pitch

I barely used the Steez before ice in, but that rod seems perfect for the 3/4oz grass jig use that I want.  From my limited experience, 1oz is doable and way more pleasant than your 844 and DX 745.  The Steez is slightly tip heavy, but has amazing sensitivity.  I have a jdm bantam 8:1 on it, approx 225g, and it feels much more neutral in hand than a lighter reel.

I like 7'6 rods for football jig dragging and would definitely consider the Poison Adrena 7'6XH.  I find the PA line to be crazy comfortable and sensitive, but I don't have experience with the XH model.
