The Frog Fishing Thread

When I am frog fishing I typically have 3 setups on my deck:

Super slop - 7'10" Loomis FS904, Chronarch, 65lb PP

Not as thick and smaller frogs - 7'10" St. Croix 5C70MHF, Metanium DC, 30lb PP (had Suffix 832 to try last year, but going back to PP)

Walking slop frogs - 6'9" St. Croix 5C70HF, Chronarch, 30lb PP

Honestly, and I admit I haven’t used them yet, but just frog handling the New Bobby’s Perfect Frog from Snagproof, I know that it’s going to replace my Scum Frog Trophy series for thick slop frog, I’d grab 4-6, 2 each in; New Bullfrog - Bluegill - Midnight. For more sparse duckweed, etc. 6 Launch Frogs by Scum Frog - 2 each; Leopard, Shad, Pitch. 
 

with those 2 frogs, in those colors, you’ll have every weather condition covered. Assuming you’ve done your research about cloud cover, etc effecting color choice?

Im big into toad fishing. Just bought 2 F Xtreme Angler rods. Looking forward to casting them. 
I don’t have a favorite frog but I do have a favorite toad. The Gambers. 
I’ve had serious success with both of them. 
I work them in moderate to heavy cover. Never throw them in open water. 
After a miss I’ll send a frog out there..

I have 2 new Xtreme Angler rods too,  I picked up the 7'1 Med Hvy & 7'3 Hvy.

Still use my first generation Mojo Bass 7’ frog rod and a Made in Japan Shimano Citica from 2005. I think the “hi speed” was still like 6.2. Use 65# power pro. Both circa 2005. Don’t laugh I still have Curados and a Castaic older than that. Not to mention a lot of old TD made in Japan from the 90’s.

What you've listed is legit going on my TW order lol. 

I've done some research, which is basically me watching too many YouTube froggin videos! 

 

Be interesting to see if this scum frog lives up to the hype, the bully wa was lights out for me. It's a bigger frog and the plastic is actually pretty firm but I didn't miss many. But it does have a decent sized keel on the bottom so it's not very good for slop, matt's or lilly pads. I find it kinda rolled over onto its side then you'd snag with your hook on that side.

The new Bobby's perfect sounds like it should take care of that problem perfectly!

Fish Lab Rattle Toad for most applications. Very very easy walking frog and good weight to it for casting.  Durable as well. Good In open water and vegetation. Only time I reallly go away from it is if I am fishing heavier mats or want a Teckel style or popping frog(mostly when there is a tiny bit of chop on the water). 
 

For the thick layered dollar pads and mats I throw the River2Sea Mat Daddy. It’s a bigger flatter keel frog that doesn’t roll on mats. 
 

Honorable Mention-The MB Big Gabbot, Molix Rattlin Pop

 

I tend to catch better fish the slower work that frog. Cast…Pause, Walk Walk Pause, Walk Walk Pause, Walk Pause. Walk Walk Walk Pause. I mix it up like a Jerkbait. 
 

No swinging side Hook sets for me. I believe the frog rolls in fish’s mouth and I tend to only burry one hook point in side or bottom of fish’s mouth. If I work the frog from 5-7 o’clock and set the hook at 11-1 o’clock I am much more likely to drive both hook points in roof of fish’s mouth. I don’t wait on them. Once I see that frog disappear I thumb that reel and Jack them. I don’t ever really reel down to my hook set either. No playing with the fish. It’s coming into the boat ASAP. If no one is there with the net it’s getting boat flipped if possible.

I was being a little negative when I said that the advice of giving a 2 count is nonsense.  When I first got into froggin years ago, it was exactly that advice that made me understand that the key to success is timing.  Like anyone new to doing something, I was not very good.  See blow up, set hook, right?  Someone told me about the "2 count" and it made me wait.  Usually too long but it slowed me down.  Then I started paying attention to what I was feeling on the end of the line and things just sorta came together.  I used to play a little golf.  Was and am terrible at it and don't really care as I'm not particularly interested in it, but I do remember how it felt when I made a good swing and heard and felt that little *click* of a well hit shot.  Exactly the same feeling when you get your timing dialed in with a frog.  I still have days when I'm "off" and always will, but I will throw frogs until the day my shoulder gives out or they chuck me in a hole

Reel: 2016 Metanium MGL 8 speed (brass gear and carbontex upgrade)

Line: 40 or 50lb Pline X-Braid (May try Sunline Plasma this year)

Rod: Either Falcon Cara Amistad XH or Halo HFX 7’3” heavy

Frog: Spro Bronzeye 65 at 5/8oz in Bone, Black, and Killer Gill

 

Typically throw late May through September here in IL

The Kister Z Bone rods I bought have 9-9.5” handles.

Using a Lew's 7'3" with #50 braid. I do have a Kastking Speed Demon 7'4" frog rod I am going to try this year.. I use a variety of frog brands and colors and all seem to work about the same..

I fish frogs an awful lot and have two combos for them:

 

• Long range
  • IRod Fred's Magic Stick
    • 7'5",  1/2-2oz, XH/MF
  • Morethan PE SV w/ 40lb PP
• Short Range
  • Daiwa BLX LG 631MHFB-FR
    • 6'3", 1/4-1.5oz, MH/F
  • Daiwa Tatula TASV103XS w/ 40lb PP SS v2

As for the frogs themselves, I use a Gavacho most of the time when I am fishing an actual frog, otherwise a Bullt Wa 65 when I want a bigger frog.  Most of my frogging takes place with the shorty Daiwa, the Fred's mostly gets used with toads/paddletail frogs.  

 

I fish from the bank or a yak and never could get comfortable walking/popping a frog with a long rod, esp when I am making shorter casts or at the end of a retrieve.  I started out looking for a shorter frog rod and ended up with the BLX.  I am so glad I did, it's one of my most used rods now and rarely leaves my car from spring to fall.

The frog window's pretty short here. It typically starts to drop off around mid July and some years even sooner, so that's only around 3-4 weeks into the season. It's not that you won't catch anything but the better quality fish have mostly moved out to deeper weeds by then. 

 

As for frogs I found the Booyah Pad Crashers to be the best in that style.
