Super User LrgmouthShad Posted March 9, 2022 Super User Posted March 9, 2022 (edited) Hey y’all, Got some heavy rain and possible thunderstorms I’m waiting to blow over. Chilling here at the boat ramp for now. We’ve had a good number of topics about spinnerbaits over the past few months. I’d like to start another. This time it’s about spinnerbait heads. The head of a spinnerbait, I’ve found, is a lot more important to me than I thought it would be. It influences how well the spinnerbait goes through types of cover and how well the spinnerbait tracks true at higher speeds. What is your ideal spinnerbait head shape? What’s worked best for you? I’m a fan of two. The classic bullet shape and the booyah covert head. What say you, and why do you like the one you do? edit: I was a dummy and put this in the fishing rods and reels section. Lol. My bad. Don’t think I can move it? Edited March 9, 2022 by LrgmouthShad 4 Quote
Finessegenics Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 I like the bullet head almost exclusively at this point. Since it’s streamlined, you’re able to burn it and it doesn’t blow out. I’ve found that the fish head spinnerbaits are a lot harder to fish that fast, it’s like the head is creating resistance. I know I’ve repeated it countless times but War Eagle is pretty much all I use now, specifically screamin eagle. 3 Quote
softwateronly Posted March 9, 2022 Posted March 9, 2022 Nichols and War Eagle with the bullet heads are most of what I use, but I found the Picasso inviziwire double willow and a gambler ez gives some great thump for real slow rolling in that 10' range. I think the pivoting swim head has a lot to do with it. scott 1 Quote

Super User scaleface Posted March 9, 2022 Super User Posted March 9, 2022 I never had a preference . I have the bullet head mold and use those over 90 percent of the time . 1 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted March 9, 2022 Super User Posted March 9, 2022 I'm not too fuzzy on the head shape itself, but I don't want a large frontal area, or a top heavy one, bullet, and the flattened fish head ones are some of my favorite, but I find the balance between the head and the blades is where the juice is. Funny, the one that was working for me this week was a Hart body with a colorado Stanley blade in front of a SK willow one. I really like fishing a spinnerbait, and they just started chewing it last two days, yesterday I was humming "It's the most wonderful time of the year" as I ran it through cover. 2 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted March 9, 2022 Super User Posted March 9, 2022 I like the way War Eagles fish in cover, open water... any speed. I'd love WE's if the heads would stay firm to the wire for more than a couple fish. The 'looseness' probably doesn't affect 'fishability' much....it just bugs me. Like I'm expecting it to blow up every cast So, I guess my answer is whatever shape you call the War Eagle heads....bullet, maybe 1 Quote

Not a fan of War Eagles other than their finesse ones. Snakeheads turn them into a slinky in one bite. 1 Quote

Agreed on the slinkyness....but they bend back and run true most of the time....unlike a couple I can think of that run crooked or bent over if you breath on them while tying them on 1 Quote
Super User Munkin Posted March 11, 2022 Super User Posted March 11, 2022 Hopefully I can spend some time with smalljaw67 this year and make some videos on the subject. There are so many variables involved its crazy and since we are both spinnerbait fanatics we could share our knowledge. In the meantime I will say that War Eagle and Booyah make good baits. Otherwise I suggest contacting Seibert and explaining your fishing conditions and he can recommend something. Allen 1 Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted March 11, 2022 Super User Posted March 11, 2022 I've had good luck with both the bullet, and swimjig type heads on my spinnerbaits. If I'm fishing around cover, I prefer the bullet type, open water both work for me. 1 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 11, 2022 Global Moderator Posted March 11, 2022 The Booyah Covert is one of the best tracking spinnerbaits I've ever fished even after lots of abuse. 1 Quote

Super User WRB Posted March 11, 2022 Super User Posted March 11, 2022 The original Tornado spinning bait head was a plane design that worked very good. The bullet head like Siebert photo posted above is the most popular and works good. I believe 90% of bass think a spinner bait runs through the water like the above photo is shown, it doesn’t! Spinner baits run with the blades inline with the line pull, the head hanging downward about 45 degrees. If a double blade spinner bait ran with the blades like the photo the front blade couldn't Spin around the wire. Tom 3 Quote

And they seem to come through wood, grass, and pads pretty well too. It’s a good head. I recently made some Zorro long arms specifically for fishing in lay downs. I’ll shoot a picture later. Someone gave me a lot of spinnerbait heads and materials. I had a lot of fun with that. Excited to test how well the long arms come through wood. Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted March 11, 2022 Super User Posted March 11, 2022 I prefer a head with a flat keeled bottom. 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted March 12, 2022 Posted March 12, 2022 My favorite head design was on the Terminator Titanium. The downside was the paint adhesion, which was poor to say the least. The Stanley Vibrashaft's head design is the one I currently prefer. Of course, that's my second favorite. 1 Quote

He also said that heads like Zorro, because of the way the head pushes more water, cause the spinnerbait to rock back and forth on the retrieve for better action. 1 Quote

It's like Almond Joys and Mounds, sometimes you want it to rock, sometimes you don't, rather the fish do.... Quote
