So I have a Dobyns 702 that I have a slx 150 on, does the job okay, but thinking of getting the bfs because I can put the slx on my new frog Rod anyway. Just slightly concerned with how little line it holds because I would definetly be using 8lb test. Mainly throw shakey heads, weightless flukes, underspins some drop shots on it. Should I go with this reel or is there one that may work a little better?

Curado BFS has a big fan club.  A friend in FL says his casts as well as his Daiwa Zillion with Roro-X spool (I'd be from Missouri on that one, though).

If you ever have the desire to fish light braid on a baitcaster, you get there by getting spool mass and inertia down - no such thing as too light or too little line capacity.

I would recommend going the other route - big diameter reel with aftermarket BFS spool - but there just aren't any more aftermarket spools out there - they've pretty much all been bought up.

I'm getting one myself shortly! The curado bfs is a much needed budget bfs reel from shimano for us over here. I've have gotten to test one out but from playing around with a buddies I am impressed! What are you going to be using it for?

I can't imagine frogging with an SLX.

I'd use the SLX over a lews or abu in the same price range.

How light are you trying to throw and how deep of water and 8lb braid or mono?  A lot of weightless baits are over 1/4 ounce, if that is the case, the slx is fine. Now a 1/16 rooster tail is a different animal. My Curado bfs casts much better than my slx. It doesn’t have enough line capacity to bomb a 1/2oz bait, but that is not its role in life.
I have reels smoother than the Curado BFS, but at its price point, it is king.  At this stage in life, I am not trying a KK ;)

Do they make a light weight spool for the slx.

Nothing to do with the brand, too small.

I like my Curado BFS alot for Neds. For the techniques you mentioned I'd go with the 70 MGL. I have both reels on Phenix Feathers, L and ML respectively. VERY happy with both setups.

I have a 702 and also a dedicated BFS rod for Neds. The BFS rod gets the BFS reel, works awesome... don’t need a deep spool for that. However, my 702 gets something with more line and strength... an Alphas CT SV70 - works great for shakey heads, smaller tubes, flukes.

From what you list the 70MGL might fit better. More line capacity and more versatile. BFS might cast further but just one snag you might need to re fill the spool. 8lb line might get you around 50 yds on less and the further you can cast the more hook set it requires.

I don’t see no problem whatsoever and I frog with Curado 70. Small size but pack with power. Might need to upgrade drag if frogging in heavy weed, that all it takes.

I know you didn’t ask me but I think no one can answer you like now since Tatula SV70 is not available yet. If you are talking about other Tatula SV TW, I would go with either Curado or SLX 70MGL. The Shimano in this case is smaller and easier to move shake or twisted compare to bigger old Tatula, at least in my medium size gloves hands.
If you wanna up your game a little bit, you might have to get Alphas SV TW (from oversea). The reel is as small and similar shape as Curado 70. The SV brake system would help control backlash better on lighter lure. Btw the new Tatula SV70 is the same frame as alphas with smaller spool (a little bit less line capacity) available to pre order from tackle trap.

Thank you sir this is exactly the answer I was looking for, think I’ll wait and get the Sv70

For the same price you can get a new Alphas SV TW 800 and get a more robust build with more aftermarket spool options.

Not yet, I have a couple legacy versions of the 70 SV reel and I’m sure the new reel is just as good if not better.

I hope I gave you the right opinion (at least my own experience). I have 5-6 reels that can be called BFS but I hardly use those unless special specific need like, weightless 3” Senko or finesse worm, Neko rig where nano braid give me the best performance and when I need small braid to cut through weed.

I doubt there would be much different internally between Tatula SV 70 and alphas SV TW, But you are right about after market spool. If OP ever consider dipping his toe into BFS, the alphas with free floating spool would be better choice. I almost ordered Ray’s spool last time I open AliExpress app???.

Hopefully they don’t jack up price on Alphas once Tatula become more available.

Do you have the Champ Extreme 702 ML casting rod?

No, I traded off the 702c and Alphas 70 SV... The 702c was nice but very similar to the Phenix Feather ML I already had. And over time, I've just decided that I'm not particularly a fan of the SV reels anymore unless I'm skipping lures.

Is the 702 rod you had the Champion Extreme? Is that the rod you said is very similar to the ML Feather?

Yes, to be fair the fit & finish of the Champ Extreme is well above the Phenix... but the action was similar enough. I had a chance to trade to get a different rod I really needed for another application and received much more in trade value for the Dobyns.  It's a very good rod though - If they had a 701 at the time I would have kept it as a BFS rod.

Megabass Destroyer FOst-66X Siglett/ Calcutta Conquest BFS HG.  My line is

Tatsu #4.

I’m throwing braid to leader on both of my Curado BFS reels and it has been great and never worry about having too little of line.

I would think a Curado 70 would work great also though…

There is $100 difference between SLX 70MGL and Curado 70MGL with zero performance advantage.
