BBZ-1 8 inch Swimbaits - Setups and Usage

I am gradually amassing a collection of 8-inch BBZ-1's, but don't really have the rods to throw them.

 

I have a couple of Dobyns 795 SB's's (Fury and Champ XP) rated to 5 oz that I use for Gantarel Jr's and BBZ Rats.

Rods say they are rated to 5 oz.  My first guess is they will be overpowered by these BBZ-1's.

 

Does anyone out there use the 8 incher's?  That's one big bait!

 

Has their popularity waned in recent years, or are they a key part of many guys arsenals?

 

Any specific applications/conditions you like these big boys for?

Suggest watching Bill Siemantel’s video’s, he created  BBZ-1 multi joint 8” Swimbait.

Bass anglers are always looking for something new, the bass haven’t changed. Today the fad is big single joint glides, something the bass may not have seen before.

8” Hudds still work and Butch Browns 10” trout.

Rods, 8” requires XHeavy 8’-9’ with 30 lb Copolymer line. BBZ-1 you can use rods rated 3-10 oz. with 25 lb line.

The 795 says it's rated to 5oz, but it feels overloaded with anything much over 3oz. You'll want something heavier for the BBZ 8".

Years ago when I was throwing the 8" BBZ, I used a Dobyns Champion 806 with a Shimano Curado 301 E, worked great for that BBZ.

Dobyns 806 SB is rated 2-8 oz, 4-5 oz swimbaits are ideal weight range.

PS, BBZ-1 slow sink and Hudd 8” ROF-12  is 4.8 oz. line, I used 25 lb Armillo on 300 size reel, Siemantel uses Maxima UG 30 lb on 400 reel.

Most anytime, especially during the winter months when the ponds/lake did their trout plant.

Last year I took up smaller swimbait fishing with the Gantarel Jr. and SPRO Rat, and a Dobyns 795SB.  I had a hard time putting it down.

 

I just added a Bull Shad 4x4 to my collection.

 

I have now collected 4 of these BBZ-1 baits thanks to SPRO give aways at the Bassmaster Classic Expos, plus a few regular sized Gantarels.

 

I will strongly consider adding one of Dobyn's 807SB or Mike Bucca 836SB rods to my collection and throw these big guys as you suggest.
