We fishermen must have somewhat of a reputation for color. When I bought my 2016 Silverado brand new off the lot, the new car Manager was also a fisherman and we had talked a long while since I was a guide and when we looked at the truck and it’s options, he asked if I wanted it in any special color to match my boat.?. I told him it made no difference unless it affected the price.

And I will say, I don't care what other people prefer. You want a hot pink rod? Go for it. You want your gear all black, great.

 

But one thing that does get a little chuckle out of me is when people match their line (braid) color to their set-ups.

I feel like you're calling A-Jay out. Huk shoes. Huk socks. Huk drawers. Huk pants. Huk base layer. Huk sweatshirt. Huk jacket. Huk gloves. Huk gaiter. Huk hat. His outfit costs more than an aluminum boat, and that's BEFORE he puts his Huk bibs on.

I don't know about the cold weather stuff, but for me, Huk makes the best hot weather clothes. Huk shirt, shorts, and gloves are my normal summer wear, and I promise its not because I like to match. With humidity in the 90's and temperatures in the upper 90's, these are the most comfortable clothes I have found, especially in straight sunlight.

HUK is good durable gear.

Keeps me comfortable up north & especially down south. 

So while I certainly appreciate the infatuation with my choice in attire,

I'll just keep doing what I do.

Your original post was a sincere question...and now that I've had some fun...

 

Thank god for my wife who's meticulously organized and has a flair for color coordination. Left to my own devices, I have the fashion sense of a 12 year old hobo lumber jack, so the idea of playing dress-up with reel parts then matching it up to a rod isn't within the realm of my imagination. Unless something's unusually loud or off-putting, I just don't care because it just doesn't register. I've browsed through the Show and Tell thread here, and have not been compelled to follow suit after seeing some very sharp looking stuff. This type of thing doesn't even make my priorities list, forget about it being at the bottom of it. Perhaps if I fished during daylight hours my inner Liberace would emerge, but I fish at night, so nobody can see my gear, even me.

 

I make no judgment whatsoever of anyone who finds satisfaction in a bit of flair, or a lot of flair. Life is short. Enrich it any way you like.

I'd love to say cosmetics don't matter to me but I can't. I'm a weekend warrior and as such when I have the ability to get a new combo I can't help but take appearance into consideration. That being said I own a BPS rod that has a red colouring to it, a megabass Levante, the SLX rod that has cool blue parts so unknowingly I have to admit some of my gear has some flash to it. However I just brought home my new baby girl, an Expride B and she's gotta be the prettiest piece of fishing gear I own! And it's all black with a cord handle. So beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. 

 

I generally find tho if less time and money is spent on making it look nice, that time and money is spent making it work right and lasting longer. Which ultimately is what everyone wants. Sometimes you just have to go the ugly route, the uncool, unpopular choice.

Anything but camo and neon are fine with me.  Even then, I'll make an exception if the price is right.  

 

I'm a graphic designer by trade.  My wife says I dress like a peacock.  Yeah, I'm that guy.  So I can definitely appreciate a well designed and aesthetically pleasing piece of gear.  But fishing isn't the place for that stuff.  I dress like a hobo on the water.  I'm getting dirty, and I want to wear comfortable clothes that I can get dirty in. 

 

And like any good tradesman, I value tools based on how they function, not how they look in my hand.  Besides, I gain a certain pleasure from using things that most people would turn their nose up at.  I come from the school of Louis Sullivan that says "Form follows function".  The true beauty of good design isn't how good it looks, but how well it works.

My three favorite Abu Garcia rods have no finish at all.  They're just graphite colored with the rod name on them.

I admit I like my combo colors to match. A Lew’s Pro TI or Abu Garcia Revo Ike on a Googan green rod is not going to cut it unless I was the Joker. 
 

The Abu Garcia Revo X baitcasters and spinning reels with the all black finish go with everything. 
 

I like how my Revo X and Zata reels look on the new St Croix Bass X rods.
