MacJig Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 So when purchasing a rod and/or a reel, how important is bling to you? In other words does aesthetics play a major part when selecting a rod and reel? For me, it is somewhat important. It isn't because I have to have a sharp looking piece of equipment. It's that I prefer one. I'm really not into that standard black and or gray that melts in with every other black or gray rod in my collection. I like some color, some flash and generally my eyes will go to that rod that has more of that bling. It makes me want to fish it more. Abu Garcia, St Croix and yes even SixGill rods have some of that bling that I think really makes them look sharp. Abu Garcia, 13 Fishing, KastKing reels can look ... A+. Do you feel the same way or does color, flash and bling mean nothing to you? What brands or models are standouts for you? 2 Quote
mrpao Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 Aesthetics are very important. I mean you wouldn't buy an ugly or plain vehicle. You wouldn't date a plain or ugly woman. Why buy a plain or ugly rod or reel if you had a choice. Too me, Daiwa and megabass make some of the most attractive gear. The color combinations just look sweet. 2 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted March 7, 2022 Super User Posted March 7, 2022 I'm not too worried about the aesthetics of a rod. Long as it doesn't look like some hack put it together in their basement, looks don't matter much. Now saying that - I'm not gonna get certain colors...just because. You'll never see me look at a pink rod twice...just no... 2 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 7, 2022 Super User Posted March 7, 2022 Less Bling for me. I run a Black Truck, a Black Boat with Black Motor and a bunch of black, silver & red rods & reels. While there's few rigs mixed in there that sport a little color, the stick jackets are about as flashy as I get with my gear. A-Jay 9 1 Quote
Skunkmaster-k Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 My wife has a pink tackle bag. Guess who gets to carry it out on the dock. 6 Quote

It's probably suffocated by now! ? 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted March 7, 2022 Super User Posted March 7, 2022 I'll refer back to my days in the aerospace industry. Form, Fit, and Function is the identification and description of characteristics of a part or assembly. Each defines a specific aspect of the part to help engineers match parts to needs. 3 1 Quote

Eric 26 Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 I will freely admit aesthetics are very important to me. Case in point I had a Daiwa CA80 on a Lews Carbon Fire rod and couldn’t take it, so I bought the identical rod a Lews Hank Parker rod and now all is right in my world? 4 Quote

If the reel doesn't match to the rod, it doesn't go on. 2 Quote

Not to say you can’t have both but bling is not a consideration to me. It’s actually a negative because I am old school and it used to be you blinged out your products to make up for poor quality. 5 Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted March 7, 2022 Super User Posted March 7, 2022 To me, rod/reel looks aren't nearly as important as other aspects when it comes to purchasing a rod/reel. With that said, it does matter to me. Personally, I like blacks/grays/silvers the most. I just like the looks, and if I have a reel with some color to it, it's easy to match up with a black rod. That doesn't mean I don't like the looks of some rods like the Megabass Levante. Or the St. Croix Legend Glass. But to me, the best looking rods I own are my Expride's. As for reels, black/silver/white for me. But I do like the red on the Scorpion and the new Lew's KVD reels. What I really can't do are crazy colors like these. Even those new BassX rods...even tho they have black blanks, the label on them are BUTT ugly IMO. No idea what St. Croix was thinking with those. 3 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted March 7, 2022 Global Moderator Posted March 7, 2022 I couldn’t care less. My fishing gear is bought to compliment what I need it to do, not that if it will look pretty in my hands. Mike 4 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted March 7, 2022 Super User Posted March 7, 2022 Bling doesn't catch fish. So, not important for me. 3 Quote
Pogues2300 Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 Less is more for me. I don’t care enough about looks to not use my favorite rod (Loomis) but if they suddenly changed them to crazy day glow green like a few other rods maybe I’d reconsider lol. Megabass p5 x-bites was my favorite looking rod I’ve owned. Quote
EWREX Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 i like a simple slick clean look. i don't mind some colored accent's, but those neon colored rod blanks give me agita 2 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted March 7, 2022 Super User Posted March 7, 2022 I kind of don't care as long the rod is not white. Sensitivity, balance, warranty and especially the "Fun to Fish" factor are what I want in my rods. 2 Quote

The beauty of it all is there's enough rods/reels out there where you can get equipment that performs up to your standard, and look aesthetically pleasing all at the same time. 13 minutes ago, FishTank said: Sensitivity, balance, warranty and especially the "Fun to Fish" factor are what I want in my rods. The "fun to fish" part is so true. I have rods like Expride, Orochi, Kistlers, Posion Adrena, and one of my favorite rods to fish, for whatever reason, is a Dobyns Sierra 734. It's just feels "right". 1 Quote

No doubt. See them all the time when shopping. Aesthetically pleasing is just not a consideration if I buy it or not. Mike 2 1 Quote
