That bait was supposed to be magical.

I remember when Chris Lane won an Elite event on Toledo Bend using a whopper plopper.  Of course, sales of that stupid thing erupted.  I got sucked in too.  Now they're nothing but expensive Christmas tree ornaments.

The hype on the Plopper was so great from that event, that most people forget that KVD actually won the tournament...not Chris Lane .

If you purchase one and install it on your boat, it won’t work quite like that. 
 

he also caught a lot skipping a jig under docks. And lots of competitors found bass on their live scope and didn’t catch them

Thanks for the replies everyone!  I knew I could count on you guys to get to the bottom of this “mystery” bait! 
I just might have the kids try a small fluke/light jighead combo on a bobber and see how effective it is!

exactly. this is nothing new.from what i could tell watching he wasnt fishing vertically.(damiki style) He was casting and swimming it. but on a relatively light head in 25 feet of water like you said you can make that bait kind of gluide and hover. a ned, tiny fluke or twitchtail minnow may have done just as well. not taking anything away from christie he went a little out of his comfort zone went to the spinning rod and caught them.

Well said, this is how a ned rig was meant to be fished according to Ned Kehde and you can knock them out of the park fishing a jighead and plastic this way. A light jighead is key. 1/16 oz majority of the time for me. Sometimes 1/10 and even 1/8 but that's rare. Constant but slow movement, it creates a gliding look which appears natural, at least to me. I can concede that a heavy current can make it hard to fish this way.

I’ve never heard a bass angler refer to it as a strike indicator - that's purely trout talk right there. The most technical you'll get from a basser is ‘float’ ?

It's a bobber here and I have some in my boat. I'm not giving up on my "float-n-Ned", idea just yet.

I did it a couple of winters ago, because I was out of ideas at the time. It works, sort of. And like I've heard some complain about the float-n-fly, it caught fish but they were mostly tiny. If I'm at that point I should probably go home.

 

Fortunately because of the kind people around here I have more tools in the toolbox now.

yup looks like a twitch tail minnow to me. again no disrespect to jason. hes a power fisherman by choice but he picked up the spinning rod and went to work. great versatility. thats why hes one of the best.

I've created a new technique in which I dont reel the bait in. Instead i cast out a crankbait and move the boat to pull the lure behind it until something bites. Somebody help me come up with a new "rig" name for it.

I might have watched 5 minutes total of Classic coverage. Everything I saw of Christie he was flipping docks with jigs. YUM might be releasing a new bait and just wanted him to mention it because they know that's all it takes for a bait to take off for at least a while. 

He said on Ike live he had been fishing the FFS minnow for 6 years considering he is not a spinning rod guy that was the bait he was most comfortable with so seeing him actually using a spinning setup on the classic I’ll take Jason Christie’s word for it over yours any day!

The FFS minnow looks almost exactly like a Berkley Twitchtail/Gulp Minnow. That thing on an 1/8oz jighead was a fish catching machine for me for several years. 

 

JC used it a lot the first couple days but that bite died on him the 3rd day and he went flipping. You don't have to take my word for it, you can literally watch the Bassmaster's Classic on Youtube. Not sure which bait you want to attribute the win to. Both played a major roll in his win.
