Last May I started a weird thread and I included a cartoon I drew of aliens fishing for people:

A few days later I drew a bunch more fishing cartoons. I'm wondering if I should re-make some of these, or if I should give it up. I've been wondering this for almost a year. I'm thinking about getting some art supplies and making better versions. I have a lot of ideas.

I can't draw great but I think I can do the humor part okay. I'll let you guys decide. I drew most of these about 9 months ago.

The fish in the foreground is just me practicing drawing fish.

plugpull2.thumb.jpg.64bfa13738116272ec75e713317cb541.jpg

My favorite caption is the last one I think:

shakeitbaby.thumb.jpg.985ff3950031c618866228089e909597.jpg

"Shake it, baby!"

donoteat.thumb.jpg.cb83011aae950e7982beb09393f31361.jpg

Lotta caption ideas for this one - bass shrink:

basspsych.thumb.jpg.b90e9990431b5543a38c3d26e9a47354.jpg

Caption possibility: "The whole experience was so frightening. I get anxiety every time I see a fat juicy worm! I'm losing weight. I can't spawn...I'm a wreck, doc!"

The cartoon that got me started. Many captions for it in the old thread above:

AlienFishing1.thumb.jpg.87f512ef3185f3d0f469520a17c3363f.jpg

One possible caption:

Alien 1: "Sure you can get numbers with the hot wings, but if you want a fatty you gotta use a cheeseburger!"

Alien 2: "I can't tell the cows from the people on my graph"

So I think I'm going to give this a try. I will remake a few of these, and a few I have not shown (my favorites). I like to let the image do most of the talking, and I don't like explaining the cartoon or making it too obvious. If I can do it without a caption that is what I prefer.

I'm not looking to sell these or make a coffee table book. I'm just doing it for fun. Let me know what you guys think, I can take it.

I think they are pretty creative.

Here is one more. This is my favorite so far.

I've shown it to two non-fishermen and neither "got it". Hopefully you guys will.

I'm going to redo a full-color version of this one for sure just for myself.

Looks like an interesting offseason hobby. I think your drawing style is interesting, and better than you give yourself credit for.

I ordered some pencils and drawing pens and good paper last night, so I will do this for fun, and not just fishing, probably animals in general. Not really sure.

I know there's a thread started somewhere here several months ago of another guy doing bass cartoons. That's all good!

The ones I've posted are old. Here's two quickies I did last night.

Holding-Branch-Catch-Lure.thumb.jpg.7e24619d5b597c001a9472e43975f020.jpg

I want to play this joke on a friend when he takes a bathroom break next time we bank fish. Put a note in a baggie and stick it on his line (yes I know the worm can't get past the bullet weight, oops!):

377984954_TheNoteVer2.thumb.jpg.e9ff02ed6aae19209dda8d4f4de40dfa.jpg

Here is the original of the one above - I did this one twice last night to practice. And this thread is probably in the wrong section....

I love them . My Dad was a really good artist but he was also big and tough so he was kind of ashamed of being a talented drawer . He was good enough to make a profession of it .

Thanks!

I drew here and there as a kid. Don't know if I'm good but some people can't draw anything, so there's that. I'm a graphic artist among other things, but the work isn't too interesting. Mainly Photoshop, product labels.

But to me, the story of each cartoon is most important. How subtle should it be, should there be a caption? Can any little details help it out? The artwork can be "good or bad" as long as it conveys the message. I think.

I drew most of these almost a year ago and thought I should buy pens etc and make them better, but I kept putting it off. A few nights ago I drew some stuff again and figured what the heck. These are all rough drafts.

I'd rather do something else than watch TV so figure I'll give this a go. Not sure what I will do with them or where to post them.

ETA: Just laughed at my goofy looking fish in one of the above images. I'm experimenting :)

If you wanted to make money doing that, I'd suggest something like cafepress to sell t shirts and coffee mugs. You make the designs and they do the rest

You can definitely draw well enough. Sometimes the rough drawings make it funnier somehow.

The far side fishing cartoons were all hilarious. They had that “ fishes point of view “ thing going too…

The answer to your question is YES.

Whenever someone wonders if they should try something -that isn't destructive- the answer is always yes. The worst thing that can happen is it doesn't pan out the way you thought it would.

My wife makes fun of me because in conversations with people, I tell jokes to make myself laugh, not them. So if this makes you happy, you absolutely should do it.

There are many physically powerful men that enjoy drawing, painting, playing a musical instrument, etc. It is something that impresses me about a person's personality.

Do whatever makes you happy, that is the best thing you can do for yourself. I liked the drawing you made of the bass touching the line with a stick to make the fisherman set the hook.

Thanks. And you bring up a good point. The cartoon is actually the fish just holding up the stick so the lure will snag it and grab it as it goes by. You never know how someone is going to see it though.

When I made video games I thought I had this one game fool proof, as in easy to learn to play. Tutorial, everything. I was wrong! When I watched people try and play it I couldn't believe it. Some couldn't even understand the tutorial!

But different interpretations are also part of the fun sometimes :)

Absolutely! Thanks for reminding me! Plus I'm gonna do it anyways, but it's the first time I've shown anyone this stuff.

The owner of the company I work for, if I learned one thing from him, is to not be afraid to try something new. His first question is, "How can I do that?" rather than, "I can't do that"

My drawing pad, pencils and pens came today, colored pencils and sharpener tomorrow LOL. That was fast! Not sure how often I will use color.

You are welcome. I am not sure if I mentioned it before but I do like to draw and paint, good enough where I can sell my artworks if I wanted to. I just do it for fun since it is a hobby for me just like fishing. I have played fishing video games as a kid but I find them boring now, which is ok since the World would be a boring place if everyone liked the same hobbies. Yes art can be interpreted in different ways, that is one of the things that makes it interesting.

Here is a redo of one of the above cartoons. Next will be the final one. I'm just getting started so I don't know the process yet. I may only do one version of each once I get going.

I'm no expert and I need to work on my skills, or maybe I should just stick to the quick sketches. We'll see. Practice practice.

Started with ink pens. I changed the cartoon a little from the original. Figured the fish carrying the stick worked better than trying to draw fishing line wrapped around each fish. This is slicker I think. It's a phone photo so not good quality:

Pull-The-Plug-Ink.jpg.d1ccfe63b0ba428c252bd3ccec8eee13.jpg

Here it is colored with pencils. BTW I'm a bit colorblind so I bought pencils with the color names printed on them LOL! I don't plan on coloring most of these.

Pull-The-Plug-Eyes.thumb.jpg.a62e471759ed3abe4c2463b53364a5de.jpg

Did that in one sitting pretty much. It's fun. I wish I had my pencils when I wasn't catching yesterday on the bank. The new pens have improved my drawing. What a difference from using whatever ballpoint I could find lying around.

It’s amazing how much difference a little bit of color can make. Nice job!

Was joking in another thread about having too many cameras when I fish and thought this one up.

It's my "Five minute quickie because I'm too tired" version. Maybe I'll redo it if I still think it's funny later. It is to me because I feel like this sometimes. Should add a dog with a cam.

Maybe I shouldn't redraw it? Not cause it sucks but maybe...I dunno what kind of look I want yet. This is me drawing too fast and on the spot.

I'm sure The Far Side was a big influence for me, I think Gary Larson is brilliant.

I like rough drafts too. When I write and record music it's the same deal. There are things in the original rough draft recording that I can never replicate again. Refining it seems to lose some of the original magic.

When you look at the original you are seeing the raw creativity I suppose.

I can't draw these days due to my tendinitis (tendonosis now oops stupid doctors) so thought I'd toss up a few doodles I did some months back. I can draw I'm not that injured but I'd rather fish or do something else with the limited pain-free use I have. Still seeing doctors.

Not saying these are great I just had 'em laying around, figured what the heck.

Abduction-Tale.thumb.jpg.2b9543a303a60c9a668f8d2a7b4e5eab.jpg

Maybe disturbing to some viewers...

Small print so

Alien 1: "Biggest human you ever seen! I had it right there on the table...500 pounds easy!"

Alien 2: "Uh huh, and the recorder just happened to be out of order, sure, sure!"

Alien-Story.thumb.jpg.b22863175543e0aef81d0e8514aa3e02.jpg

Should have gone with the spear gun. Eels always look like they're expecting something to happen don't they? Ya that's an eel.

Gun.thumb.jpg.9bf9d64a1e5a688ab41c7bfd2b5f3adb.jpg

Whatever...

"He says he'll tell us where the bigguns are if we let him go."

"Don't believe him!!!"

Rat-Fish.thumb.jpg.4b1365a9a64d2e11fee18beec12e3b98.jpg

Bad Bad Leroy Brown.......

Tough-Fish.thumb.jpg.d5488344d5c685a4198fd60676c4c10e.jpg

I do seem to take the bass' side in a lot of these drawings, probably because so many people suck.

Always remember, bass eat their children. Constantly. You don’t read about humans doing that terribly often
