Super User NorthernBasser Posted March 6, 2022 Super User Posted March 6, 2022 Bluegill version of the Dark Sleeper. Supposedly the release date will be sometime in June. Not a lot of info out there on these, but sure to be a big hit. The Japanese release has 15 great colors. Here are a few. 8 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 6, 2022 Super User Posted March 6, 2022 Nice looking bait. But (except for the first bait pictured) right off, I'm not seeing much in the way of a 'bite' between the bait body & the hook point. Always hard to tell in a pic. Either way, I'd be checking these out when available. A-Jay Quote

Like you said, hard to tell since the first pic looks better than the others. Little off topic, but have you gotten your hands on the Berkley Agent E? At first I thought "great, a Dark Sleeper knockoff". Which it kind of is. But that weed guard is gonna make it more weedless than the Sleeper, for sure. And I like the colors. And they come in 2 pack. I just got this color the other day. Can't wait to try them out. Quote

Colors & patterns seem especially appropriate, especially for up this way. Price point is about half the Dark Sleeper too. I throw these baits in mostly open water deals, (too many pike in the weeds) so the first thing I'd be looking to do is Snip that hunk of line off it. Might check them out. Thanks btw - I've got a little new to me goby bait I'm banking on quite a bit, so until I have a feeling for how that goes, most everything else is on hold. A-Jay 3 Quote

Those definitely look like a goby more than the other 2 options. Interesting rigging BTW. I'll be curious to know how well they perform for ya. 1 Quote

Thanks ~ Coincidentally, those jigheads I'm using are actually the 'guts' from totally tore up dark sleepers. #repurpose A-Jay 2 Quote

I also tore some out last year to get a good look at them. 2 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 6, 2022 Super User Posted March 6, 2022 Yup ~ I like the hook size & stoutness as well as the shape of that lead. Expect to use it on a couple other deals as well. Just about anything that I want to 'slide' along the bottom. Let's not tell anyone . . . . . A-Jay 1 Quote

BlakeMolone Posted March 6, 2022 Posted March 6, 2022 Savage gear has one coming out too that I think looks just as good although a little different 1 Quote
Junk Fisherman Posted March 6, 2022 Posted March 6, 2022 I'm waiting to see if these Sleeper Gills have the flat bottom like the Dark Sleeper. Definitely gonna try those Berkley baits when they come out. Quote

Definitely gonna try those Berkley baits when they come out. They appear to be flatter. They don't look like they’d sit up on the bottom, like a dark sleeper. Bet these would be fantastic for skipping docks though. 2 Quote
Frezzy Posted March 7, 2022 Posted March 7, 2022 I've got about a dozen Dark Sleepers and have never caught a d**n thing on one. I fish a deep clear water reservoir loaded with big Smallies too, so you'd think they would work. Just one bait I cant figure out... 6 hours ago, NorthernBasser said: Yeah, we'll have to see how soft that plastic is. Or might have to bend the hook up a tad. A-Jay What you think, might be worth using a cps and texsposed or exposed hook through the body? It should allow you to keep the weight low and centered for that almost damiki rig horizontal swim. 4 hours ago, NorthernBasser said: Bad pic, but you can kind of see the jig head in the pink bait. Haven’t tested them out yet. Only some colors/sizes are currently available. They look like they have potential. I’m a big sleeper guy myself and have been waiting for these since they were announced. I’ll be waiting for the Bluegill sleepers too. Quote
Bass Rutten Posted July 10, 2022 Posted July 10, 2022 Received 3 of them recently, I’ve caught a few but the last one was a doozy. I was burning it, bouncing and grinding through some shallow rock (about 3’ deep) and got one of the most aggressive strikes in recent memory, it was only 17” and just under 3lbs but geez I wish every hit was that vicious. After some time with these I could see it working just as well if not better as a swimmer than a jigging lure, especially shallower where it’s weight lets you work it at higher speeds without blowing out while staying in contact with bottom/cover. Hookup ratio does not seem to be a problem for those that are concerned, the whole area in front of the hook is hollow and collapses unlike the solid construction of the dark sleeper. 1 Quote
IneedAnewScreenName-98161861 Posted July 10, 2022 Posted July 10, 2022 My local shop got a shipment few weeks ago and I bought 3 different colours. First one broke off on a cast! ??? Now I'm scared to use it lol, I have one to my dad so now I'm down to 1. Ive yet to have a bite from it but I for no real reason have more confidence in this then the dark sleeper. The dark sleeper actually makes me mad cause I watch all these people catching smallies like crazy with the dark sleeper and I've never got a nibble in 2 years. The Gilly tho, it's a nice size and the colours are wicked. If you got bass earring bluegill or pumpkin seeds then you show really give this one a go! My concern is how hard they are to get, the cost of them and how durable will they be after a few fish. Quote

Super User Darth-Baiter Posted July 11, 2022 Super User Posted July 11, 2022 i cant wait to get a hold of one or two of these. they would slam fish around here. Quote
Cbump Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 I looked for some today. All the places said they sold out almost immediately. Almost ended up with a Huddleston gill type swimbait but passed for $26. Quote
Super User NorthernBasser Posted July 27, 2022 Author Super User Posted July 27, 2022 Proof that this bait works. Few weeks back I threw the Sunshine Gill color with no luck. One bite but didn't hook up. Yesterday was a different story. Fishing some thicker weeds in 10' of water. Just swimming it and popping it free when it'd get hung up. Pumpkinseed color. Caught 6 bass and a pike in a 45 minute span. A few of them really committed. I think every one of them knocked slack in the line. They'd hit it and run straight at me. Few times I wondered if I had missed them. Before and after: 4 Quote
