torm Posted March 6, 2022 Posted March 6, 2022 Hey everyone, just picked up a stella 2018 3000 and spooled it up with 8lb fluorocarbon. Everything felt fine at first until I gave it a test cast. When reeling with tension at the end it makes a loud scratching noise instead of being quiet. My buddy thought it was the line creases that were in the fluoro but I put on braid and it still makes the same noise. I'm pretty positive its the line roller bearing because my vanford had the same issue after a couple of months of using it. I was able to fix that one because I was able to get out the bearing with a screwdriver and replaced it with a new one. Seems like a simple fix but the Stella on the other hand, I have not been able to knock off the bearing for some reasons. Am I being picky or is there something wrong with my stella? I tried to upload a file on here so others can hear it to diagnose it easier but it seems I can't. 1 Quote
mrpao Posted March 6, 2022 Posted March 6, 2022 It should be quite. Probably bad bearing like you said. A repair shop might be able to fix it for you. Quote
torm Posted March 6, 2022 Author Posted March 6, 2022 Okay! So I wasn't being picky then. I do wanna take it to a repair shop but right now majority of them is booked with orders so I do kinda want to try fixing it myself. A line bearing doesn't seem to hard to fix from what I've seen but the issue is I just can't seem to get the bearing out of the stella like my vanford. My vanford easily popped out after just applying a bit a pressure, but the stella is in there good if its a bearing in there. Quote
Nelson Delaney Posted March 6, 2022 Posted March 6, 2022 If you registered your Stella with shimano it comes with “free” service. Just pay shipping Quote
Super User FishTank Posted March 6, 2022 Super User Posted March 6, 2022 I have you tried putting some oil on it (just a drop or two). I would then take a small rubber band and run it over the bearing running it back and forth. The rubber band should work the oil in. If you hear the noise still while running the rubber band, it definitely would need to be replaced. Quote
torm Posted March 6, 2022 Author Posted March 6, 2022 I put oil on it, ran it over with a cue tip, and it unfortunately sounds the same. Even took off the screws wiped everything and oiled it and its still the same so I'm assuming the bearings is bad now. Still can't get it out though so I may have to order a bearing removing tool. Tried looking up videos to see if someone tore one apart but can't seem to find any either unfortunately. Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted March 6, 2022 Posted March 6, 2022 Sounds like it’s seized, corroded etc. there’s nothing in the schematic to indicate is shouldn’t pop right out. Shimano’s site shows a lot of parts discontinued already. 1 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted March 7, 2022 Super User Posted March 7, 2022 Line roller is Shimano's weak point. I'll give them an edge over Daiwa on every other aspect of '18 Stella and the line of reels they derived from it, beginning with '19 Stradic. They all share the same line roller (and over-designed A/R clutch, etc) - when you see a ball bearing line roller packed with lithium grease, you have to know something's up. It's chromed bronze, and the biggest nylon part separates the single BB from the bronze - again, all packed with lithium grease. All the seals really do is concentrate salt, because once it gets in, there's no way out. The chrome is hard enough it won't wear through, even when frozen. MTCW makes this titanium dual-BB line roller upgrade - especially since I use my reels primarily in the salt, every Shimano I own gets it. Compared to the stock line roller, it spins like a bicycle wheel. no seals, no lithium grease, oil the bearings every year and swap them out when needed. 1 Quote
torm Posted March 8, 2022 Author Posted March 8, 2022 I might have to end up ordering that, how did you get your bearing out? I've been pushing on what I think is the bearing and its lodged in there. My vanford, I was able to open it and it popped right out after I pushed it with some force. 1 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted March 8, 2022 Super User Posted March 8, 2022 (edited) When you work on handle knobs, they come with little bearing-puller hooks, and my work box, which is an open Sp. cedar cigar box has several of them loose in the open lid. I've never looked back after replacing with MTCW. Fishingshop, kiwi has stock in bright finish - I believe shipping is $32 https://fishingshop.kiwi/M-t-c-w--Mtcw-Line-Roller-Ver-U-Silver-Shimano/ Hedgehog studio has them at retail and $28 to ship, both heat-tint titanium and bright finish. They also have a diagram showing the assembly. https://www.hedgehog-studio.co.jp/product/3947 but there's not much to it - put all the old stuff aside - all you need is the screw and the sex bolt axle. Stack right size shim washers, bearings and line roller in the right order - of course it comes with a new pair of bearings. The thicker red shim goes to the bail side.
