Frog Combo - should I go Heavy or Extra Heavy

Got notified yesterday my local shop just got a handful of the new Exprides in. 

I was looking to get a new frog rod and the timing is perfect. 

I had them but the 7'2H and the 7'3XH aside for me to come in today and feel them. 

 

This is going to primarily be my frog rod but was also wondering if it could be a pitching stick too, maybe jig rod. But primarily it's for froggin. 

 

Which model do people think would best suit my needs?

Personally, I would get the 7'2" H for frogging, can't think of a reason why you would need a XH for that presentation. And yes you could use it for pitching also. I don't have any experience with that rod, maybe others can help you that have that rod.

I am in SoCal and I must go XH for frogging, But I think on your area H will do the job.

You're pretty close to the same latitude as I am...so the bass would probably be a similar size.

 

A heavy should be more than sufficient for frogging - that's what I'm using up here in the north.

Crap I went for the XH. 

Yea I definitely don't have BIG BIG bass in my area. Heck I'm still chasing my PB of a 5lber. 

I just figured I'd go XH cause better to be stronger then weaker? I also follow and take alot of advice from Matt and Tim of Tacticalbassin and for years their favorite frog rod is the Expride XH but in all honesty I didn't really think about the size of fish they catch compared to mine.

 

Should I try going back to exchange it for the H?

They shouldn't have a problem with an exchange.

 

Ya - our state record here is 8-15 and I'm still looking for my first 5#+ myself. I know they exist in my lake - local tournaments have had 7#'ers...I just gotta find them.

Yea as long as they still have it left in-stock!

 

But with the XH I can also use it to flip heavy matt's and grass. That was my thinking. The two lakes I fish are weeds from shore to shore.

The XH has turned out to be super versatile for me and we don't have giant bass either.  I frog and run large weedless swimbaits with mine.  I also pitch 3/4oz jigs into heavy weeds during the summer.

If it’s a dedicated frog rod the xh has a faster tip if I recall which makes a difference to me for frogging plus if you ever do run into some gnarly cover you will have confidence.

If you decide on a XH and depending on the action of it compared to what you’re accustomed to, you may have to tweak the timing of your set a little. 
 

Point is, not all things are equal. 
A heavy powered rod should be sufficient for all frog water, the action would be the deciding factor for me.

Depends on the slop you fish more than the bass size.  If it is super thick and nasty I upsize to a custom built 904 I had made, if it is more sparce I prefer a MH.  IMO you can't have only one frog rod, but I'd rather fish a frog over all other presentations.

I think this wins for me. Cause I really want to try flip heavy weeds with a big jig this summer so although sounds like the H would be good, I went XH for the theory of I don't need to be worried about how gnarly the cover is AND I can also pitch that jig in thick grass this summer.
