I use old style pistol grip rods 5'6" or 6' . Its the only technique I use short rods on but I can walk a bait much easier with them .

Ditto.  Well, I also use the 5'5" pistol grip for poppers.

Though really, it's personal preference.  It all depends on how high your boat sits above the water, how tall you are, what angle you like to hold your rod, and what you're comfortable using.  Even the action isn't standard.  A lot of people like extra-fast for these lures, to give them more snap.  I like moderate speed rods, because I don't have an issue with the snap, but I do have an issue with keeping fish pinned on those treble hooks.

My only absolute, it must be a casting reel.  Line gathers on a spinning reel in loose loops for me when using this technique.

5'6 baitcaster for me. I like a soft tip for this technique as well. The short rod is how I learned it and I can't take the dog for a walk with longer rods for whatever reason.

Major Craft Iovino Splash-It rod is 6’8”, MF works good for me.

I use 11 lb Sunline Armillo Nylon line for top water lures to 3/4 oz. Heavier lures you will need 15 lb and MH rod similar length. MJ ARC-69MH* fast action, 1/4-1 oz. Super Spook is 7/8 oz, Rover is 3/4 oz for example.

I use the falcon expert 6'10" finesse jig/topwater rod.  I'm fishing it from a kayak.  I don't hold the rod vertical, I'm more of a 45 degree and can walk a spook or sexy dawg with no problems at all.  I throw 14 lb suffix elite on that rod.

My favorite of my rods for topwater river fishing for smallies is a 6 foot Rapala Medium Rod. It’s older than dirt. Butt handle has had Gorilla glue applied in a few spots. A few guides are shot (line cuts). I should retire it but can’t. I still have the original hang tag from it. Maybe make it a wall hanger.

My second favorite is a 6 foot Pinnnacle Rod same age, maybe a hair older. A lot of river smallies during the 80’s with these.

6'8 MXF St Croix.  Had it custom built with ultra light guides and cork for jerks & walking baits.  Amazing how much it reduces fatigue.

My go to for walking baits in the Daiwa Tatula Elite TAEL721MHRB 7'2" MH Regular action. It has a fast enough tip to allow me to easily walk the lures, but is moderate enough to not be any issue with keeping fish pinned on treble hooks.

My preference for walking baits is with spinning gear.

7' M stick with a good tip, a 30 size reel with 15-20lb braid and a 10/12 lb mono leader.

I can launch a cast quite a ways, seems less fatiguing for me and

I can get a nice rhythm going.

Never have any problems with line management.

Yup, but I take a 6'6"- 6'9" MH Fast or Mod Fast and cut 2" off the handle with a hacksaw. I use a 6' for poppers, but that's a whole different animal.

A man who has a Rapala AND a pinnacle rod as favorites knows his stuff...

Man I would not BS you. A Chug Bug or Pop-R on those has landed many smallies. It don't need to be a $350.00 rod.

7’ Falcon mh mod fast.  Let you budget choose what series.  I like the Bucoo and Low Rider series best for walking baits.

Edit:  if you are talking about the 3/4 or 7/8 oz option for those baits I would use the Hammer 6’9” H rod.  It doesn’t an amazing job with heavier walking baits.

That’s the exact almost rod I’m looking for. Tatula Randy Howell big TOPWATER 7’4. Maybe I’ll look for that model thank you !!

Noticed they mention on their website that the Heavy rods fish like MH’s and a parabolic bend to keep the fish pinned and I’d bet it will chunk em far too huh ? I wonder how fast Hammer would send that to my house ?? Thx man I’m really liking what I see.

Honesty dictates that i confess. This spring I'm trying out a 6.5' m/fast cherrywood for spooks.

Wish me luck. Its replacing a 50yr old Ugly Stik that weights a ton.

I use an Evergreen Combat Stick 7'2 MH / Mod Fast rod and Dobyns Sierra 734C for my walking baits. I like both equally and use whatever is with me that day. I'm using 16/18lb sunline machine gun cast mono or 40lb sufix 832 braid.

I’ve tried the Dobyns “Fury” that says pretty much the same type that Sierra rod says. It’s too whippy for walking baits for me. How is the comparison if you’ve used it before between the fury and the sierra ?

Fury is more moderate than the Sierra if i remember correctly.

I am really surprised at some of the responses and the length of the rods.  Personally I am a HUGE fan of long rods and have a bunch I have kicked out to almost 8' long, but there is one rod in my arsenal that won't ever be long and it is the walking bait / jerk rod.

I've not used a Fury 734 for a direct comparison. The Sierra is more moderate under heavy load compared to my Dobyns Champion and other models. It is not crankbait rod moderate by any means though.

I have no issues with it for 1oz walking baits like a Showerblows 125. I like the load for casting and landing purposes.

I know I used 2 different 7 ft rods for jerking yesterday and it SUCKS. Think I’m gonna go with under 7 foot for sure.
