I am new to posting in this forum but not new to forum classifieds. I typically try to research items that I need and then see if anyone has them available, but used, for better prices. I have two young boys (12 and 14) and this type of shopping helps me to be able to afford to buy tackle or gear for both of them, rather than just 1…..or neither. Some forums allow me unlimited messaging while others have limits. I believe I am currently limited to 1 message per day unless I post more on the general forums. Sadly, being someone who does not fish a lot, I guess I dont have much that I feel is germaine to most of the conversations. So, as to respectfully and responsibly using the forum and still trying to find some tackle at a reasonable price, while also helping a more senior member to get rid of stuff he does not want……would it be more appropriate for me to post a WTB ad….in the Flea MKt forum?  I am

taking my boys to Quebec in July and we are fishing for walleye….I have been looking for some used crankbaits for them to be able to just throw out and retrieve. We have casted

jig heads/powder coated them/glued eyes to them and clear coated them….and tied deer hair skirts on them. It has been an amazing experience. So as to crankbaits, any suggestions would be appreciated…..and I sincerely appreciate the forum and its rules….just want to operate within them.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Good luck.

I don't know anything about Quebec walleye.  I do know that Ontario walleye seemed to prefer jigs to cranks about 3 to 1.   Casting cranks was fun...catching was even funner

It is a dream trip for me……just want to keep them busy and away from electronics…..except maybe a battery powered depth finder!

Rapala DT series cranks, buy at least a few for each depth you think you will be fishing, probably should be using metal leaders with them because pike like them too.  I would get the Ike's Custom Ink color Smash if going with only one color.  For a second I would get some chartreuse or perch or Helsinki shad.

Thank you. I will look at bass pro shops unless there are better options.

The Strike King cranks would also be a decent choice and a little cheaper than the DT series.  I throw both, and they are both good cranks!

Lots of good suggestions here. Walleye, like bass, will go after a variety of lures but for some reason I have done better with skinnier and less erratic crankbaits for walleye. Something like a Shad Rap or Berkley Flicker Shad (both original and shallow models). Walleye don't seem to eat the big and bulbous crankbaits I usually associate with bass fishing as well as the Shad Raps. That is my experience at least. FYI, the shad raps are made of balsa so they're not the easiest to cast as they catch wind easily. If you're casting them on a spinning rod, it should not be a problem.

Which lake will you be staying at? I've done my fair share of walleye fishing in northern Quebec, maybe just maybe I've been to the lake. So many bodies of water up there you couldn't fish them all in a lifetime. You'll have loads of fun. Also welcome to the forums.

Thank you. We are fishing Lake Simard. I would like to night crawlers or minnows, but seem to have read that you can’t take them across the border. Any truth to that?

You should be able to buy bait locally in CA. I know from a boat trip in high school customs will be looking for stuff like that.

someone recommender strike king cranks, I’ve caught walleye on the 1.5 square bills and the 1.5 flat side. Look into scrounger jig heads, have caught a lot with those with a Gulp shad rigged up. Also get the wire leaders cause the pike are no joke up north.

Live minnows are forbidden just about everywhere in Quebec so it is illegal to fish with them anyways. Probably not allowed to cross the border with them. I’d assume that crossing the border with nightcrawlers would not be allowed as well, but you should be able to find the bait in QC. A lot of the outfitters sell it themselves. Some may even carry leeches.

I’ve heard of Lac Simard but given that it’s a common name, there’s probably a few other lakes in the province with the same name so I can’t be sure if it’s the same one. If it’s the one in the Témiscamingue region, then it’s probably good fishing. I’ve fished a nearby lake a few times, Lac Kipawa which also is connected to the Ottawa river system. Ottawa river looks like it flows right into Simard, so there should smallmouth bass in that lake as well! It might not be worth the effort to specifically target them but they will be a nice bonus catch.

The outfitter says it’s good fishing…..and I have no reason to doubt him. But, having never caught or fished for walleye, I hope there are some dumb, hungry ones in the lake! Thanks for all of the advice. Last night we made a battery box for the portable fish finder. If nothing else, it has been good to keep the kids off of their devices…
