Fishing.  I’m relatively new to all of this.  I fished in my youth but not seriously. Now it’s borderline obsessive level stuff. :)

I was wondering why I show my friends pics?  It’s to show off really, right?  Am I a showoff?  (Asking myself, not you). Even holding up a fish to show your buddy paddling around 100 yards away.  Hooting and hollarring. Is it validation?  Or purely to document the event?

pics start some unwanted questions.  “Where was that”. Ask me no questions and I’ll tell you no lies. Haha.

I have more fish pics on my devices than ones of my wife.  Eek.  Or my dog. So interesting.  Not sure I need to photograph EVERY fish I catch.

IMO, the only one that any of that really matters to . . . .  Is You.

Do what feels right & fun.

Because that's all there is.

Just keep doing you.

Everyone else is already taken . .

and now . . .

Yeah I learned quick that fish catches without pictures don't mean jack to most fishermen I've encountered. Not as true for on this website, it seems. We generally respect each other regardless. I don't photo every fish I catch, but if I catch a nice one, of course I'm getting a picture. Because if someone asks me what I caught and I tell them I caught a nice one, it's pretty often they want to see a picture next. Because what are fishermen known for? Exaggerating! Bass pro welcomes all liars. Photos are an insurance policy for me.

Of course it is to show off.  I don't post pics anywhere when I find deal on ground beef.....or when I get my oil changed.

I don't photograph every fish...unless it is a catch/photo/release tournament,  but there's far more pics of fish on my phone than pics of my wife.  BUT....they're mostly pics of different fish....if I had pics of lots of different women on my phone, I suspect I wouldn't have to worry long about how many wife pics I have

Wise beyond your years on the last part. Haha

i guess it is to "show off" your proud moment of catching a nice beautiful healthy fish. i used to take a picture with almost every fish i caught, but now i am more selective. although i always take pictures holding fish after a tournament weigh in regardless of size. no shame!

It would have been nice to have digital photography when I was a young man . I caught dozens of big bass from public spots that I have no pics of . Heres one on some Mississippi river back water .

Man - my first camera was a Kodak Brownie - upgraded from that to a Kodak Instamatic 110.

When I was in the Air Force, I bought a Minolta XD-5 SLR in 1981.

(BTW: Anyone want a 35mm SLR? I'm selling it with 2 lenses on FB Marketplace.)

I take pics of 90 something percent of them. Then I know what was biting what time of year by going back through my photos

It's much easier to take a picture these days.  I always have my digital camera with me, or my phone if I forget the camera.  I prefer the camera.  It's waterproof, at least that's what it says.  I generally take pictures of decent size fish depending on the species.  Or pictures of a fish I've never caught before.   They do come in handy for backing up your story.  I don't how many times my fishing buddies come back and say.  "You should have seen the bass, chain pickerel......, John caught"  I ask them "where's the picture?"   No camera.  How about your cell phone?  And I get a stare.  We're a bunch of old farts and think the only thing the phone is for is to make phone calls.  I've been fishing with these guys for a long time, so I tend to believe them.  It would be nice to have a picture to back up your bragging.

I do it as evidence.  If I don't have a photo, it didn't happen in most people's eyes.  Black and white, that simple.  I fish in a work/office contest every year and in order to have a valid entry, I have to take a photo of the fish on a measuring board for verification.  "Action" photos are accepted to, but the score is based on the length and proof is required.

With smart phones that have a lot of megapixels, its pretty easy to take a photo nowadays.

I only take photos of fish that of the "large" variety.  A large bass or fish is obviously relative in many people's minds.  If your PB is a 12 incher, then a 14 incher is worth taking a photo.

I am personally not impressed with a photo of a 14 inch bass, so I see no reason to take a photo.

I tend to txt a pic of a good fish to my wife most times out.....I like to share my good fortune with her.....and it doesn't hurt to reinforce the fact that I really AM out on the lake by myself .....and not.....well, somewhere else ?

You can't lie - you just like taking pics of your hot wife with fish in her hand. :wink3:

Sharing pics of fish I've caught with folks is part of my religion.? I also enjoy looking at pics of other folks  fish which likely took many trips, hundreds hours, and thousands of cast to catch. There's no discrimination in my boat due to a fish's size.

I take pics of better than average bass to share with my lady and my buddies. Also sometimes as a fishing log for myself to look back on time of year, weather and bait choice. As far as taking pics as proof here's my take..people I care about knowing will believe me if I have a pic or not..anybody who won't take me at my word? Probably people whose opinion means absolutely nothing to me. Mostly I  take pics for me not to prove my claims to strangers.

Like Fallser said, it is so easy to take pictures nowadays so why not take photos of your fish?  I'll send them to my wife and daughter and a couple fishing friends.  They send pics to me as well.  The pics are not "proof" in my opinion.  I wouldn't get any satisfaction out of exaggerating about my catches.

I don't post many fish pics to FB because I think that is kinda obnoxious since most of my friends and family are not fishermen.  I'll post a big fish or fish from a vacation but I am more likely to post a picture of the sunrise than of my best fish on some random day.  Now Instagram is different- I post a lot of fish pictures on there but I only use Instagram for fishing and not for family.  I post pictures of my boat, lures, rods/reel, ect....  Then again, Instagram is for pictures so I feel it is appropriate.

That's it in a nutshell. No picture and it's just another "fish story".

P.S. The Fishing Reports sub-forum would be a real snoozer without 'em.

Why post pics? Because its fun and people around here enjoy seeing what you caught, whatever it is.  Nobody else cares about my stupid fish, so I post pics here when I catch one.

Yep, my friends will believe me, and I believe them, and as far as everybody else, I tell them I never caught a fish in this lake before ?

There was a guy at the lake I fish that used to carry a measuring board the size of a skateboard around with him as he fished from the bank. That’s carrying it a little far in my opinion. No pun intended.

My general rule is to draw the line at a 3# minimum for pictures, unless it’s something special.

That's my minimum as well, I track catches over 3lb as in smaller fisheries they are IMO a good indicator of a potentially quality fishery. No pictures of anything smaller unless, as you said, there's something unique about it (unusual pattern, a big milestone, entry for a lure challenge etc).

Of course I show off the catches I'm proud of! It's part of the sport IMO, just like when Al Bundy scored four touchdowns in a single game. Sometimes you just gotta brag. ? Only a problem when it's a person who cannot also be humble or needs to brag over other people/put them down to feel better about themselves.

Had a guy ask me a few springs back  if I'd caught anything that day. I said yeah I caught a nice largemouth about 10 minutes before he got there..he said its too cold so I don't believe you. I said your right..then I shook my head in his face and walked away.
