Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 1, 2022 Super User Posted March 1, 2022 I got real sick over the weekend. I had nearly every symptom of Covid. Took a test , and it said negative. Lost my taste at some point on saturday. I feel about 75% normal now,,with a lot of rest , over the counter medicine, and antibiotics starting yesterday. I have had my taste leave before when I had head colds, but it immediately came back when my head cleared up. Well, my head is clear, but still no taste. Whats going on here? My wife cooked one of my favorite chicken recipes last night , and I couldn’t taste it at all…? 2 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted March 1, 2022 Global Moderator Posted March 1, 2022 If I had to bet, I’d say you got Covid and your test was inaccurate. At any rate, hope you are on the mend 8 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted March 1, 2022 Super User Posted March 1, 2022 Get re-tested or just assume you have it. I had a mild case and lost my sense of taste for a week. 6 Quote
Super User Bird Posted March 1, 2022 Super User Posted March 1, 2022 Certainly sounds like a false negative, happens. Sounds like you're mending and from family members who had Covid, taste is last to return. 1 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted March 1, 2022 Super User Posted March 1, 2022 Yes, retest for sure, they can have up to a 30% error rate. Also check the side effect of the meds you are taking, some side effects affect taste and smell. Most folks who "loose their taste", are actually loosing their sense of smell. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery. 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 1, 2022 Author Super User Posted March 1, 2022 Thanks for the replies. What’s weird is nobody in my family ( 5 people ) that live with me have had any symptoms at all. I have the most contact with the public though. But you’d think if it was covid one of them ( esp. my wife) would have gotten it from me. Thankful they haven’t. Definitely some weird times. Me, I feel 75% better, but still have chest congestion. All I can taste is the dayquil and onions . ? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted March 1, 2022 Super User Posted March 1, 2022 OTC tests are bunk. My entire house had Omicron, but my youngest son (21 mos.) and myself never tested positive. Everyone else tested positive. These were the Abbott test kits, not the cheapo Biden kits we got in the mail. I'm triple dosed with Pfizer, so I'm thinking that had an effect on the test kit results. Yes, I lost my sense of smell. Put hot sauce on everything you eat. Glad you are feeling better. 2 Quote
Super User gim Posted March 1, 2022 Super User Posted March 1, 2022 I know a couple people who didn't get their full sense of taste back for months. Its an unfortunate long term side effect, amongst many others. Hopefully yours returns sooner than later. 4 Quote

813basstard Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 If you start wearing Jean shorts, anything that resembles Ed Hardy clothing, a backwards baseball cap with your sunglasses on top then you’ve REALLY lost your taste. 1 10 Quote

Jean shorts ( jorts ) are a thing in Florida. I have a pair I wear fishing. I dont know who Ed Hardy is, but the only time I ever wore a backwards baseball cap is when I played catcher , lol. 1 Quote

Ha Ha!! Perhaps a little boxer shorts exposure to boot. Quote
Junk Fisherman Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 It will most likely come back in a couple days. It definitely is depressing so I can empathize with you. My wife has had a long term effect where dairy and wheat smell and taste like garbage. It started a couple months after she recovered from Covid and it has been going on for 5 months now. I feel so bad for her. She's basically on a Paleo diet now. She hasn't had pizza or a burger since last October. 1 1 Quote
Kev-mo Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 Yeah I would get retested, 3/4 of the family got it at a Christmas party. I tested negative 4 days after exposure (wed) and a day before my fever started. I retested 6 days later (tue) once I had the energy to drive and was of course positive. I was also sick March 2021 and tested negative. However no doubt in my mind it was covid as the symptoms and progression were the same as my recent Christmas illness. By the same I mean EXACTLY to the hour.... Vaccinated in between those two bouts.... just sharing how it went for me not taking sides. I hope all works out and you have no lingering effects! 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 1, 2022 Global Moderator Posted March 1, 2022 Sounds like an inaccurate test. I had it but didn't loose my taste or smell, just a fever off an on, headache, and body aches for a couple days. 1 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted March 1, 2022 Super User Posted March 1, 2022 Hope you get better soon. Losing your sense of taste or smell is one of the most common symptoms. It might last a couple days, weeks, or longer. The virus has become more contagious and is much more dangerous than any flu, that is a fact that many do not want to accept. Being fully vaccinated with booster shots helps but does not make you immune to this virus. There are people who got 4 shots and still got infected. Best thing anyone can do is take this virus seriously. 2 Quote

throttleplate Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 wife and i got sick 2 weeks ago with what i believe was the flu along with the common cold. It lasted 6 days. Could it have been covid i dont know as i didnt care to get tested and just dealt with it like i normally do. We didnt lose any taste or smell and am back to normal, both of us have never recieved the covid or a flu shot. 1 Quote

Super User DitchPanda Posted March 1, 2022 Super User Posted March 1, 2022 My buddy had Covid...his wife and son both dodged it. As far as what's going on? You have covid. I'd get retested. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted March 1, 2022 Global Moderator Posted March 1, 2022 Mrs Mike was really sick for long while. We put too much faith in 2 rapid tests and tried to treat and convalesce at home. It was a mistake. PCR tests confirmed she had it. We put too much faith in those and we almost…..well it wasn’t good and she’s still not right. Don’t mess around with it Mike, It’s no joke. See a doctor and confirm with the more accurate way of knowing. I wish you the best. Mike 2 1 Quote

Super User N Florida Mike Posted March 1, 2022 Author Super User Posted March 1, 2022 My taste came back today. From what I’ve heard, Im fortunate. I try not to take life too seriously all the time, but not tasting a good, tasty meal is pretty serious in my book. Im coughing up a bunch of phlegm but there seems to be a big supply left down there, otherwise feeling better overall. Thanks again for the advice and concerns… 5 Quote
