Their small size just seems to get them bit far more then bigger ones. It takes very little wind or rain to distort the little profile of that bait even in clear water. Dont let the small size fool you into thinking they dont catch quality fish. I agree. A 9 lb 9 0z on a 3/16 Booyah Pond Magic 7 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted February 28, 2022 Super User Posted February 28, 2022 Spinnerbaits are one of the most snag-less lures going . They come through cover extremely well . There is a good video about them here at Bass Resource. I feel the key to catching bass is how they are cast . Try different weights until you come up with the one that can be cast with the most accuracy . I like a 1/2 ounce on a 7 foot mh action rod . Glenn talks about it at 12:57 of this video . 4 Quote

I want to like them, and they will catch fish, but I find them too light, and I think there are better options in the tiny spinnerbait realm, but what do I know, I don't like War Eagles (Other than their little guys)... The full sized Booyahs, I'm a fan. 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted February 28, 2022 Super User Posted February 28, 2022 My best spinnerbait days have also been when there is something to reduce visibility in the water like rain, clouds, wind, or at night. In really murky water they can still produce fish during a sunny day though because I think the fish gravitate towards that thumping blade(s). A calm, sunny, warm, bluebird day is not generally what I think of when using an aggressive fast-moving lure like a spinnerbait though. They are generally a lure I work a little higher in the water column and as some have already stated, if you run it into something like a weed, dock post, wood, etc often times that will trigger a strike. A black spinnerbait was my best producing lure last season. Normally I would just toss it at night, but I tried it on a rainy August day last season and it was very productive, so I continued to use it several more times after that. Pike and muskie love them too. I caught this thick 37 inch tiger muskie last August on a black spinnerbait in the rain. 7 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 28, 2022 Global Moderator Posted February 28, 2022 If the water is soft, bass will eat a spinnerbait. I've caught some of my biggest spinnerbait bass a day or two after ice out fishing a single Colorado bladed spinnerbait as slow as I can reel it. Only time I won't fish one is when there's lots of stringy grass to wrap up in the blades. 1 Quote
EWREX Posted February 28, 2022 Posted February 28, 2022 i finally just started throwing them consistently to gain confidence last season. i stuck with it and was actually pretty successful in the right situations. whenever the wind picked up i immediately grabbed my spinnerbait. making a decision and having it work made my confidence jump leaps and bounds. 1/2 oz. nichols pulsator metal flake is my go-to Quote

For me it is one of my confidence baits. I am surprised some guys have not had good luck with the spinnerbait. I fish for many different species especially LM bass and it is a "go to" lure especially when things get slow. 1 Quote

newyorktoiowa57 Posted February 28, 2022 Posted February 28, 2022 It's ideal when there is some chop on the water and it is a bit overcast. Worst conditions are in crystal clear water in the middle of a sunny day. But it will work anywhere during the prime time windows around sunrise and sunset. Quote

There's really something about it in the cold water. Many people associate a single colorado with prespawn. I think prespawn plays a role in the single colorado's effectiveness during this time, but I also think the cold water has a lot to do with it too. Historically, summer is my worst time for fishing spinnerbaits, and I don't throw willow leafs hardly any. Correlation? I plan to find out this season. Coldest water I've caught em on a spinnerbait is low 40s. I have no doubt it will work even colder. PB caught in 49 degrees. I've thrown this thing a lot! Quote

I caught a 6.5lb prespawner in low 40 degree water on a red with double painted red willowleaf blades Strike King spinnerbait with a big pork chunk many years ago right after ice out. One of those extended warm fronts that melted the ice quickly and I think she had moved up shallow to sun. Only fish I caught that day but I'm fine with those kind of fish being the only fish on a early season day anytime. 1 Quote

Thanks for sharing! I use a single Colorado 99% of the time in early spring, but occasionally, being able to keep it down deeper or reducing the vibration can get a few more bites and when you're only getting a few to start with, that's a big deal. Super User soflabasser Posted March 1, 2022 Super User Posted March 1, 2022 Spinnerbaits are one of my favorite lures for bass fishing. They can be fished near the surface, midwater, and fished slowly near the bottom. Most people like fishing spinnerbaits near aquatic vegetation and submerged timber but you can also do well fishing spinnerbaits in open water. 2 Quote
